BETHANY, OKLA. - Newman Baseball wrapped up the Opening Weekend vs Southern Nazarene, earning the series win after storming together 23 runs in game 2 of today's 7 inning doubleheader.
Game 1
Asher Finke was flawless through the first 3 innings and got help from the Jets' bats, jumping out to a 4-1 lead when when Zack Stewart hit his 2nd home run of the season in the top of the 6th over the right field fence.
The Jets couldn't hold the lead going into the bottom half of the 6th, however. SNU would score 6 unanswered off 4 hits and 2 errors in the inning.
Newman had an opportunity for a comeback in the 7th when Eli Wohl got on base in hopes of another Jets comeback but a fielders choice would get the first out and a double play would end game 1 of the doubleheader in favor of the Crimson Storm.
Game 2
The Jets got things going right off the bat in the second game of the doubleheader. Carson Hawks put the Jets on the board right away with his first home run of the season, scoring Jenner Steele and Jake Angelico to start what would eventually become a 23 run game for the men in baby blue.
Newman had another big inning in the top of the third inning, playing 7 runs off 6 hits. Jake Angelico scored 2 of his 7 RBI's in the inning with a single up the middle to make it 9-5 Jets. Angelico would have perfect game at the plate going 4-4 with a home run the next inning, an RBI double to left field in the 5th, and a bases clearing double in the 6th to earn 7 RBI's in the 7 inning game.
SNU would hit 4 home runs in the second game of the doubleheader but could only muster together 12 runs which still wasn't good enough to put a dent into the Jets commanding lead. 2 of the 4 homers came in the last inning to bring the 23-8 lead to 23-12.
Carson Hawks finished the game 2-3 with 5 RBI's. Jason Schneider went 3-5 with 3 RBI's. Eli Wohl went 3-4 and scored 3 times.
