Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jets fall to 12th ranked Nebraska Kearney

WICHITA- Newman hosted #12 ranked Nebraska Kearney for Newman Athletics Hall of Fame game. Nebraska Kearney also ranks 1st in the MIAA in defense. 

The first quarter of play was even. The Jets were getting good looks at the basket, but struggled to finish going 6 for 15 in the quarter. The Lopers were unable to connect, but the Jets sent them to the free throw line. At the end of the 1st quarter , Newman trailed by only 4 points. 

The second quarter was the Jets could only net 8 points. 3 pointers from Maddie Spagnola  and Torri Vang tried to spark the offense, but couldn't quite get it rolling. Newman shot 23% from the field and 33% from the arc in the quarter. The Jets gave up 18 points, going into halftime down by 14, well within reach of closing the gap in the second half. 

Newman came out of the half getting good shots, but still unable to connect. The Lopers got hot from the field where they shot 57% from the field and 50% from the arc. With their hot shooting quarter the Lopers extended their lead. 

Though the Lopers extended the lead, the Jets kept fighting. The 4th quarter was their best scoring quarter, with 17 total points. Newman went 10-10 from the line in the quarter. The Jets scoring came too late in the game to catch up with the Lopers. 

Valerija Lioukina netted 12 points along with 4 rebounds. 

Amiya Josey brought in 9 rebounds. 

Newman is back in action vs. Washburn on Wednesday, February 8th at 5:30 pm.
