Newman handles Washburn with 3 Jets reaching double-digit scoring

WICHITA- The Jets hosted the Ichabods for an I-35 showdown. Washburn's losing streak continues as Newman handed the Ichabods their 3rd straight loss. 

Scoring was spread out for the Jets first quarter. Britney Ho lead the way with 4 points. Newman shot 40% from the field in the quarter. This even scoring helped the Jets win the first quarter 15-13.

The hot shooting continued into the second quarter. Carissa Beck led the 2nd quarter with 8 points going 100% from the field and free throw line. There were 5 lead changes in the first half, but the Jets were not going away. They extended their lead to 8 at the break. The Jets held the Ichabods to 26 points and 28% from the arc while forcing 9 turnovers in the first half. 

Out of halftime, the Jets made the first run pushing the lead to 12. Washburn put some pressure on the Jets with a press that helped them cut the lead to 3, but could never take the lead.  Scoring by Ho and Maddie Spagnola, who had 13 of the 19 points in the quarter, helped keep that lead alive. Newman shot 54% from three and 50% from the field, the Jets were hot and had all the momentum.

Washburn cut the lead in the 4th quarter to as little as 7, but the Jets kept fighting and always answered back with points of their own. Big threes from Amiya Josey and Jordan Heckert pushed the lead to 14 points with only 4:45 minutes to go. The Ichabods cut it to 11 a few minutes later, but Torri Vang came up with a clutch 3 to put it back to a 14 point lead with 3 minutes to play. 

The free throw line was a huge key in their win. Newman went 13-17 from the line in the 4th quarter to seal the win over Washburn. Spagnola hit 6-8  from the stripe in the quarter. Newman outplayed the Ichabods and had control of the game from the start. Newman also won the points off turnover battle with 23. The Jets handled the Ichabods with a 74-62 win. 

Ho and Spganola both scored 14 points as well as 5 rebounds. Spagnola also added 4 assists. 

Beck netted 13 points going 3-5 from the arc and perfect from the free throw line. 

Newman travels to Emporia State Saturday to take on the Hornets at 1:30pm.
