WICHITA – Baseball were unable to get their first series sweep of the season against Missouri Western on Sunday, as the Jets fell 10-6. Newman had won their last four games via the run rule, including two against the Griffons, but were unable to get much offense going until later in the game.
Missouri Western scored three runs in the top of the first and wouldn't relinquish the lead at any point in the contest.
Newman would get on the board after
Jack Kiser's single would bring
Zack Stewart home, with the lead cut to 3-1.
The Griffons would get another run in the fourth, but another single from Kiser would send
Hayden Vandepol home with the score now at 4-2.
MWSU would continue to score, adding two more runs in the fifth. Vandepol would cut into the lead with a two-run homer to bring the Jets within one run of tying. The slim lead wouldn't last, as the Griffons started to hit their stride in the last three innings to put the game out of the Jets reach.
Jenner Steele would hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth, which was his eighth of the season, but it was too little too late as the Griffons would win 10-6.
The Jets get the series win with a 15-5 victory on Friday and a 12-2 drubbing on Saturday. Newman moves to 5-5 all time against the Griffons.
Newman will head to Fort Hays State on Tuesday for a one off conference game and will then travel to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri for a three game conference series beginning on Friday.
