WICHITA- Newman hosted two home matches. The Men hosted Harding for MIAA/GAC conference play and the Women hosted No. 44 Nebraska Kearney for MIAA play.
Men's Tennis:
The Jets faced a tough competitor, Harding, who has a few players ranked in ITA polls.
Ali Mounir and Gustavo Gil and Luca Penteado continued their impressive year of doubles by taking another win, 6-3. Jarrod Nowak and Isfan Makhmudov had a close finish, but small mistakes hindered them and were unable to take the win. The Jets lost the doubles point.
Kurt Suarez Bruckner played a high level opponent at the #1 and lost 2-6 and 3-6.
Ali Mounir couldn't get into his groove at the #2 spot, and lost 0-6 and 2-6.
Pedja Kolaric brought in the first Jets singles win in the #3 spot. Kolaric dominated in the first set with a 6-0 win. Kolaric was up 4-0 on his opponent in the second until his opponent retired to give Kolaric the default win.
Makhmudov played a solid match at the #4 spot. In the first set, Makhmudov was only up 4-3 but was able to finish it out strong and take the first set 6-3. He took the second set with ease at 6-2.
Gil had a tough first set at the #5 spot, losing 6-1. Gil was able to battle in the second set to take it to a tie break, but lost 7-6.
Luca Penteado's opponent retired as well, which gave him the default win.
The Jets lost the tight match, 4-3.
The Jets will head to Topeka, KS on March 31st to take on the Ichabods.
Women's Tennis:
The Jets came out with a bang, stealing the doubles point. Isabela Campos Bifano and Dana Issabayeva played very solid in their 6-2 win. Nicole Bono and Amber Hands were able to seal their win, 6-2.
In the singles, No.62 Issabayeva played in the #1 spot against a ranked opponent, No.42 in NCAA DII. It took her time to settle in, which let her opponent steal the first set 1-6. In the second set, Issabayeva put up a fight, but lost the tiebreak resulting in a 6-7 loss.
Ani Zeikidze played a higher ranked opponent, but that didn't stop her domination. Zeikidze took her sets 6-3 and 6-4, a hard fought win.
Bifano played well in her first set, but ultimately had too many critical mistakes to come out on top. Bifano lost 3-6 and 4-6.
Bono and Hands were unable to secure wins in the #4 and #5 spot.
In the #6 set Antonia Ramos handled her opponent winning 6-3 and 6-1.
The Jets lost the match 4-3.
Newman hosts Fort Hays State Saturday March 25th.
