WICHITA – Softball swept the Lincoln Blue Tigers in their double header on Saturday. The sweep secured Newman's first series win in conference play this season.
Game 1:
The first game went back and forth for most of the contest. Lincoln took the lead in the top of the second inning, but the Jets would level the score in the bottom of the inning when
Laurie Cooke's grounder to second brought
Anissa Ramos home.
Lincoln would take the lead again in the third inning, but the Jets responded quickly, tying it up when
Laurie Cooke stole home, followed by
Gianna De Luca-Paape scoring off of a sacrifice fly to center field. The lead was now at 3-2 in favor of the Jets.
The Blue Tigers would keep responding, tying it up twice going into the bottom of the sixth. The Jets would then produce one of the their best hitting innings of the season, scoring 7 runs. The day was capped off with catcher
Samantha Gutierrez's home run, which put three more runs on the board. The Jets would go on to win the game 11-4.
Madison Dewitt won her fourth game of the season.
Jackie Gold als recorded her first save this season.
Gutierrez, Ramos, and Cooke all went 3-4 from the plate.
De Luca-Paape went a perfect 2-2 with 2 RBIs.
Game 2:
The Jets would carry over their strong hitting from the end of game one, scoring six of their seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Jets leadoff hitter,
Gianna Navarro, blasted a home run in her first at bat of the game. A double from
Laurie Cooke batted in 2 runs and
Gianna De Luca-Paape would continue her impressive day with a home run that scored three. The Jets took the early lead 6-0 after the first inning of play.
In the 4th inning, Navarro with a hot bat hit a leadoff double.
Madi Canez was able to hit Navarro in a few batters later to extend the Jets lead to 7-0.
The Blue Tiers would be unable to score any runs in game two.
Megan Walz won her second game of the season, allowing only three hits and striking out four batters in seven innings of work.
Newman would move to 13-27 with the two wins on the day.
On Deck: The Jets will host William Jewell in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, with games slated for 2 and 4 PM, before heading off on the road for three conference series matchups at Rogers State, Northeastern State, and Emporia State.
