Jets season comes to an end in the MIAA tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. - Baseball's historic season came to an end on Sunday afternoon with an 8-4 game three loss to the No. 13 Missouri Southern Lions. The Lions used a late scoring run to distance themselves from a tough Jets lineup.  Missouri Southern struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Nobody had hit a home run in the series until the next half inning as freshman Jack Kiser launched the series first homer over the left field fence to tie the game. Kiser finished the series batting .500.  Starter Nate Denniston pitched five innings, striking out six batters and allowing just three runs. He held the Lions at one run through four innings before a two run double in the fifth gave the Lions a two run lead.  After a triple and a pair of doubles, Southern hit a two run homer to jump ahead 8-1. Down to their final six outs, Newman rallied for three runs in the eighth. Hayden VanDePol led off with a single and advanced to second base on a throwing error on a bunt by Shawn Marquis. Jake Angelico singled to right field to score VanDePol and Marquis would score a batter later when MIAA Player of the Year Jenner Steele singled to left field. Jason Schneider singled to left field to score Angelico to cut the deficit to four runs. He finished the series batting .336 with five RBI's.  The Lions shut the Jets down in four batters in the ninth to take the series win and advance to the next round of the MIAA tournament. The Jets end their season with 23 wins and their first ever MIAA tournament victory. They finish with their most ever conference wins at 14. Newman had eight hits and were led by Shawn Marquis with two.  To keep up to date with Newman Athletics follow us on social media @newmanjets and visit us at www.newmanjets.com
