Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Kowitz's first goal leads Jets to an emotional victory at home

The 2-1 result was Newman's second win of the season

WICHITA - The Jets defeated Missouri Southern for their second win of the season, with the winning goal coming from Katrina Kowitz in the second half.

Newman had not won a game since the second game of the season against Northwestern Oklahoma State earlier in September.

The Jets controlled the pace from start to finish and put away their chances in critical situations. Leading goal scorer Maylani Birckbichler scored her third goal of the season to give Newman a well deserved 1-0 lead just 19 minutes into the game.

The Lions would equalize 10 minutes later to bring the game all level at half time.

The Jets continued to attack the net, with multiple shots missing wide of the target. However, the Jets were about to put away one of their biggest chances of the season.

Freshman Katrina Kowitz, who had only appeared in five matches and totaled 116 minutes, came on as a second half substitute and scored an incredible goal from outside the box to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.

The win was Dylan Gruntzel's third at Newman, and surpassed the win total from last season, where the Jets won one match. It was the most the program was won in a season since the 2021 spring season, where Newman won 3 games. It also was Newman's most wins in the month of September since 2019.

Gruntzel was proud of how his team played against Missouri Southern stating "I'm proud of the girls for how they overcame adversity through an emotional week to get a win. It was more than a game for them tonight and they left it all on the field".

Newman returns home this Sunday to take on #10 Central Missouri at 1 PM, before heading on the road for the next four games.
