QUINCY, Ill. - Newman Volleyball travelled east for the Quincy University Hawks Invitational on Friday. Their matchup to open play was the host, Quincy. Newman fell in straight sets to Quincy who received votes in the latest AVCA Coaches' Poll.
In the first set, NU was unable to get the ball rolling. The Jets were outhit by the streaking Hawks. Newman fell behind 19-8, but forced Quincy to use a time-out while outscoring the Hawks 7-6 to close a 15-25 set loss.
Set two saw a scoring run by Quincy that Newman was unable to overcome. A 20-7 QU margin put the Jets under after earning a 7-5 lead to begin play in the second stanza.
Set three was a night and day difference for the Jets offense. Newman swung a .333 with 12 kills. The 12 kills accounted for more than half of their total offense from attacks.
The offensive surge was not quite enough as Newman succumbed to the high powered Hawks attack 21-25.
Natalie Meyer had herself a day despite the Jets' struggles. #18 hit .700 with 8 kills, leading NU. The Sophomore from Tempe, Arizona also led the Jets with a pair of aces.
