Last Time Out

The Jets faced off with one of their toughest opponents so far this season, forcing overtime and defeating a top regional foe in Fort Hays State.

At one point down by twelve in the first half, the Jets chipped away at the lead and would only be down by one point going into the half.

With just over six minutes remaining, Newman took an 8 point lead, which was their largest of the contest. The Tigers overcame the deficit, but a layup from Sam Somerhalder with just 40 seconds left tied the contest.

The Jets would only give up 2 field goals in overtime, and would get one of their biggest wins of the 2023 calendar year.

Recap | Box Score

Scouting the Squadron

The Jets have had some impressive performances in the last two games, with multiple players stepping up in big moments. Thomas Zevgaras had his best performance of the season against the Tigers, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a double-double outing. Stevie Strong returned to his early season form, scoring 25 in the overtime win.

Freshman Devin Walker has been playing some big minutes since making his debut in early December, coming up with some big buckets down the stretch.

Strong is still leading the team in scoring averaging 15.2 points per game, who has gone up several point since the beginning of December.

The team currently sits in 9th place in the MIAA conference standings, as the team will look to get their first road conference wins of the season.

Behind Enemy Lines

Emporia State is coming off an impressive first half of the season, going 10-3 overall. Following a surprise opening day loss to UNC Pembroke, the team has gone on an impressive run, only losing to Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western since then.

The Hornets have a similar conference record of 3-2, and are just above the Jets in the standings with several other teams at 3-2 in the MIAA.

Washburn is 7-4, and although not having the best start to their year, have rebounded with a 3-2 record in the MIAA.

The Ichabods have also won their last two games, defeating Missouri Western and Northeastern State just before the Chritamas break.

The Series

Newman is 8-9 all time against the Hornets, with Emporia State winning the last six contests. Despite early dominance in the series from the Jets, they have only beaten the Hornets twice since joining the MIAA.

The Jets are 2-12 all time against the Washburn Ichabods. Newman last won in 2014, who have since lost the last eight to their in-state rivals.

Upcoming Attractions

The Jets return to Fugate next week, hosting Rogers State and Northeastern State.
