Ring out the old, Ring in the new

The Jets will begin the new year on the road in Emporia and Topeka, as they will take on Emporia State and Washburn in the first two games of 2024.

Last Time Out

In the final game of 2023, the Jets hosted #21 Fort Hays State in the only game that the Jets would play on a Sunday this season.

While the Tigers would go on to win, several Jets had decent showings against their ranked opponent. Senior Carissa Beck had three three pointers in the game and Amiya Josey once again got into double digits.

It was a tough weekend for the Jets, but they will hope to turn a new leaf at the beginning of the year and take down two in-state foes.

Recap | Box Score

A late Christmas gift

The Jets hosted an exhibition contest against William Woods over the break, with the Jets going on to win 75-51.

Scouting the Squadron

The team has gone through a bit of a rough patch through the month of December, not shooting particularly well, but showing glimpses of improvement in each game. Their tough stretch was not helped by the fact that they played some of the tougher teams in the conference to open up the year, including #3 Central Missouri and #21 Fort Hays State.

Carissa Beck has taken over as the teams leading scorer, a place many expected her to be at this point of the season. She is averaging 9.5 points a game and shooting almost 38% from three.

On the defensive side of the ball, Delainey Wylie is averaging over 2 blocks per game. She had five blocks in her last game against the Tigers. Wylie also leads the team in free throw percentage among players consistently playing, shooting 81.8% from the line.

Behind Enemy Lines

The Hornets of Emporia State enter the new year with a 5-5 record. Having started out conference play with a 3-0 start, the Hornets lost their last two to Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State.

The Hornets had a disappointing non conference slate, not picking up a single win over an NCAA opponent. Despite their recent losing streak, the Hornets have won four of their last six.

The Washburn Ichabods are at a healthy 8-3 record, already having picked up a win over #23 Northwest Missouri State this season. The Ichabods are also 3-2 in Conference play, with their ;latest win coming over Northeastern State just before the break.

Two of their three losses have come by five points or less. The Ichabods are also undefeated at home this season.

The Series

The Jets and Hornets have met 14 times since 2011, with the Hornets leading the series 10-4. The Jets narrowly lost their last meeting with ESU, with the Hornets getting a 83-79 victory. The Jets have only defeated Emporia State at home and have never won a game in White Auditorium.

The Jets are 4-6 all time against the Ichabods. The Jets won the last meeting 74-62 last season. The Jets have struggled scoring against Washburn, averaging just under 50 points a game when the two teams play.

Upcoming Attractions

The Jets return to Fugate next week, hosting Rogers State and Northeastern State.
