Jets pickup early season win against the Cardinals

McMillin scores 24, Lioukina records double-double

WICHITA- Women's Basketball hosted William Jewell for their fourth non-conference game of the new season. The last time out the Jets cruised past Central Christian. This time out against the Cardinals, the Jets came out on top with a 68-52 win.

How it Happened:
- In the first quarter of play, the Jets got on the board first with a layup by Jaeden McMillin. The Cardinals were quick to respond with a three from Ayden Shannon. McMillin responded with an and one which she converted to take the lead at 5-3. Shannon responded with another bucket to tie the game, her fifth point of the game for the Cardinals. McMillin kept up her hot hand with another jumper to add her seventh point and take the lead back for the Jets. Shannon continued to score for the Cardinals and tied the game at seven all. Layla Pierce got in on the action on the Jets offensive end with a bucket of her own and a free throw to help the Jets take the lead at 10-7. A jumper by Charlize Williams put the Jets up by four. The Cardinals were able to tie the game at 12 all with 1:35 left to go in the first quarter. Paige Craft earned a trip to the free throw line to retake the two point lead with just over a minute left in the quarter. However, the Cardinals battled back and ended the quarter with the 16-14 lead. 
- The Jets came out in the second quarter with a Valeriya Lioukina basket to tie the game. McMillin scored just thirty seconds later to take back the lead at 18-16. Craft extended the lead to four with a jumper. McMillin scored the next possession to keep the run going and take the lead at 22-16. The Cardinals responded with a three pointer by Shannon to cut the Jets lead back to just three. McMillin later connected with a three to take back the six point lead with  just over six minutes left to play. Free throws by the Cardinals cut the deficit to five. The Jets were able to keep their offense rolling and add another two by Craft. Shannon kept the Cardinals in it with her hot shooting, making another three at the four minute mark to make the game 27-23 still in favor of the Jets. Craft hit a three, assisted by Saige Grampsas, with three and a half minutes left to play to extend their lead to seven. The Cardinals came storming back and brought the game back to just one point with the Jets still on top. With five seconds left, Lioukina connected with a layup to put the Jets on top at 32-29 going into the half. McMillin led the Jets with 14 points at the half with six rebounds. Lioukina added nine rebounds. Shannon led the Cardinals with 15 points, going 3-3 from the three point line. 
- McMillin was first to find the net in the second half with a jumper. Lioukina added a layup of her own to make it a seven point game. The Cardinals wouldn't go away, Shannon scored again to cut the game to 37-31 with the Jets leading. Monica Redondo scored her first points of the night at the 7:46 mark in the third quarter to take the Jets to an eight point lead. Shannon kept the Cardinals in it with a layup, her 19th point of the night to cut it to six. Shannon also added free throws a minute later to take it to a 39-35 game. Redondo connected with a jumper with four seconds left on the Jets shot clock to get the Jets offense going again. Shannon again found a way to keep the Cardinals in the game and earned a trip to the free throw line where she connected with one. Lioukina grabbed a huge offensive rebound and put it back in to keep the Jets rolling with a 43-37 lead. With under a minute left, the Jets were in the bonus. Redondo earned a trip to the line and connected with both. Craft ended the quarter with a layup, her 11th point of the night, putting the Jets with a 47-37. 
- McMillin earned a trip to the free throw line to start the fourth quarter, making one. Off of her missed free throw, Delainey Wylie secured the offensive rebound which led to a McMillin three to extend the Jets lead to 51-37 with just over nine minutes to play. McMillin earned yet another trip to the line, missing the first but making the second. The Cardinals were able to hit a three, but Grampsas connected with her own the next possession to keep the Jets rolling. William Jewell was able to respond with another three to cut the deficit to 12. Lioukina added her tenth point of the night at the 6:46 mark to put the Jets at 57-43. A minute later, the Cardinals were able to hit a layup to stay within striking distance. The Cardinals brought themselves within ten points with under five to go. McMillin connected with her 24th point on the night to keep the Jets rolling. Craft added two free throws to add on, making it 61-47 with four minutes remaining. Craft kept the play making going and found Lioukina alone at the rim to add two more. Lioukina added two more with a trip to the free throw line. With just over a minute left, Hayley Hughes earned a trip to the line and sank both free throws to secure the Jets win. Newman downed the Cardinals, 68-52. 

Player Notes:
- Lioukina led the Jets with 18 total rebounds adding 14 points. Lioukina broke the Jets record of rebounds in a single game, the previous record was 17. 
- McMillin led the Jets in scoring with 24 on 9-18 shooting. 
- Craft added 13 points and five rebounds.

The Jets are back next Tuesday at Emporia State for a non-conference match up.
