Jets sting Hornets in non-conference contest

McMillin and Pierce add 17 points a piece in win against Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan.- The Jets traveled to face Emporia State to compete in a non-conference contest. The Jets will later face Emporia State in a conference game. In this non-conference matchup, the Jets downed the Hornets 74-59.

How it Happened:
-The Jets hopped out to a 4-0 lead with buckets by Jaeden McMillin and Valeriya Lioukina. The Hornets quickly tied the game at four all at the six minute mark. The Jets then put together an 11-4 run.  A three by Monica Redondo started off the run. Then Layla Pierce added two of her own. The next possession Brooklyn Love connected from the three point line. Another three by Love put the Jets up 15-6. The Hornets then went on a 5-0 run to end the first quarter to make it a 15-11 game to end the first quarter. 
-In the second quarter, Hayley Hughes connected with the first bucket of the quarter to put the Jets up 18-11. McMillin then was awarded a trip to the free throw line, connecting with just one. Pierce then took over on the offensive end, connecting with two buckets and her sixth point of the night to put the Jets up 23-16 with 5:14 to play in the first half. Out of the five minute media timeout, Redondo extended the Jets lead to ten with a deep three, her second three of the contest. Pierce kept the Jets offense hot with a coast to coast layup. McMillin then scored the next possession with a pull up jumper. Lioukina added onto the Jets lead, 32-16, with a layup. This layup forced the Hornets to take a timeout with 2:45 left to play in the half. Gracie Gilpin of the Hornets was able to stop the Jets run with a deep three to put the deficit at 32-19. The Hornets added another three before the half, but Redondo connected with a two point bucket with seconds remaining. The Jets went into the break up 36-14. Pierce led the Jets with ten points in the first half. Redondo added eight with two steals. Love went 2-2 from the three point line with two blocks. 
-Out of the break, Elizabeth Tjaden of the Hornets scored five unanswered points to cut the Jets lead to 36-27. Lioukina was able to stop the 5-0 run with a basket. McMillin connected with four points in a row to extend the Jets lead to 15 at 42-27. The Jets then took a timeout just under six minutes in the third quarter due to two minutes without a Newman bucket, but the Jets defense kept the Hornets scoreless throughout those two minutes to keep the deficit the same. Out of the timeout, the Hornets were able to cut the deficit to 11, but Paige Craft struck back with a layup for her first points of the night. The Hornets kept battling, but the Jets continued to answer the call. Pierce added her 12th point of the night to make the score 46-32. The Hornets brought themselves within ten points with two minutes left in the third quarter. Emporia State was able to cut the deficit to just five points at the 1:21 mark after Katie Horyna added her 13th point on the night for the Hornets. McMillin answered right back with an offensive board and put back to for seven point lead. Craft added another bucket to end the quarter with a nine point lead at 52-43. 
-Out of the quarter break, Craft connected with a smooth turnaround jumper to keep pushing the Jets lead. The next possession, McMillin connected with a pull up in the lane to put the Jets up 13 with under nine minutes to play in the game. McMillin continued to cook on the offensive end, hitting yet another up and under on the Hornets defense. The next possession, Redondo sunk a step back three to push the game to 61-46. Saige Grampsas connected with her first basket of the night with a floater in the lane with just over six minutes left. McMillin then drove into the lane and dumped it off the Delainey Wylie for her first basket of the night. The Jets continued to dominate, after Craft found Pierce and then McMillin on back-to-back possessions to make the game 72-48. Kaitlyn Reeves hit her first basket of the night with 59 seconds left to play to put the Jets up by 20. The Jets took the win, 74-59. 

Player Notes:
- Pierce scored 17 points, her career high. 
- McMillin posted 17 points with eight rebounds. 
- Redondo scored double-digit points with 11 and added seven boards. 
- Love tallied five boards, three blocks, and six points. 

Women's Basketball stays out on the road to face Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 PM on Friday in Edmond, Oklahoma.
