Bethany, Okla. -The Jets traveled to Oklahoma on Thursday afternoon to face Southern Nazarene in Newman's first ever GAC/MIAA postseason appearance. After a historic season breaking multiple team and individual records, receiving votes to be nationally ranked for multiple weeks, and earning nine ALL-GAC player awards, the Jets were looking to continue breaking records by adding their first ever win at a GAC/MIAA postseason championship. The Crimson Storm, who hosted the tournament for the fourth straight year, hoped to continue their streak and defeat the only team that was able to beat them in conference play. The match ended 3-2, putting an end to Newman's 2024 season.
How It Happened
- The match started with both teams testing each other with multiple long possessions looking for the best way to attack. SNU added 3 shots in the first 10 minutes of the game but none of them were close to Juan Carlos Cordova's goal. Alberto Romano recorded the first shot of the game for the Jets in the 20th minute with a strike that barely missed the left post of SNU's goal. In the 33rd minute, Romano scored his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot to give the Jets the lead. Two minutes before the end of the first half, Mario De Roque Zazon had a big chance to score after a great solo run and a fantastic dribble between two SNU defenders left him alone against the goal keeper but with a hard angle to shoot from. His shot missed the goal to the left. The Jets went into the half leading the Storm 1-0.
- The Crimson Storm added three shots to start the second half. Two shots were saved by Cordova and the third was misplaced. In the 59th minute, SNU tied the game with a goal from half field. Thirteen minutes later, the Crimson Storm took the lead with a goal that came from a cross by Esteban Ramirez that was deflected by multiple Newman players and ended in the back of the net. But the Jets weren't done just yet. In the 79th minute, Mario De Roque Zazon crossed a perfect ball after another successful dribble past SNU's defense. Nicolo Lai found the perfect moment to score his first goal as a Jet, as he headed in the cross by De Roque to tie the game once again. Four minutes later, SNU added their third and last goal of the game, off of a deflection, to leave a final 3-2 score and end the Jets remarkable season.
