Jets fourth quarter surge downs the Panthers

Four Jets score double-digits in win over Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Jets faced Drury to wrap up the Drury Thanksgiving Classic. Against the Panthers, Newman took the game, 79-73. 

How it Happened:
- Valeriya Lioukina connected with the first points of the game after Saige Grampsas found her underneath the basket for a two. Drury was quick to tie it at two all. Lioukina then scored the next Jets basket to retake the lead at 4-2. The Panthers kept answering the call to the Jets scoring. Grampsas hit a three at the 7:36 mark to take the Jets lead to three points. Jaeden McMillin then scored her first bucket of the game to keep the Jets up by three. The Panthers brought the score within one point at 9-8 going into the first media timeout. After the media timeout, the Panthers took their first lead of the game with a layup by Caitlynn Daniels. Layla Pierce answered the call with a three pointer to put the Jets back up. Paige Craft got in on the Jets offensive scoring with a turnaround jumper to push the lead out to four with just under three minutes to play in the quarter. The Panthers cut the lead to two with some free throws. Lioukina took the Jets back up by four with a layup at the minute mark. The Panthers found a way to tie it to end the quarter at 16-16. 
- Craft added a three on the first possession out of the quarter break to take the game to 19-16 in favor of the Jets. McMillin added a single free throw a minute later to take it to a four point lead. McMillin continued her hot hand and connected with her fifth point of the game to take the Jets biggest lead of the game with 8:31 left to play in the half. The Panthers were able to battle back within three points, but McMillin answered the call again with another jumper. Lioukina added her eighth point to put the Jets up six with six to play, but the Panthers were battling back. A basket by Sara Mendel of the Panthers put the game at a two point game. McMillin pulled the Jets offense along with another jumper to hold steady with a four point lead at the media break. After the media timeout, Drury tied it at 28 all and then retook the lead with a free throw. Lioukina scored her 10th with a layup that took the lead back from the Panthers. The Panthers were then able to put their largest run of the half together, which put them up 36-30. With 34 seconds left. A half court heave by the Panthers as time expired put Drury up nine at the halfway mark, 39-30. Lioukina led the Jets in the half with ten points. McMillin added nine points. Despite the hot shooting by the Panthers in the half, 50% from the field, the Jets were battling heading into the locker room. 
- The Jets came out of the break with some momentum and energy. Buckets by Monica Redondo, Craft, and McMillin brought the Jets back even with the Panthers at 41 all with seven minutes left in the third. Drury retook the lead with points by Rhi Gibbons, but Pierce answered with her fifth point of the game to make it just a one point deficit. The Panthers then extended their lead out to five.  Then Craft earned her way to the free throw line to cut it to three. McMillin continued her hot hand, scoring her 14th point with 1:30 left in the third to make it 51-47 in favor of the Panthers. Pierce added more points with under a minute left to keep the Jets within striking distance. The Panthers went into the quarter break up at 53-49. 
- Gibbons was first to score in the final quarter on back to back possessions for the Panthers to extend their lead out to eight. Gibbons kept the hot hand, and scored a minute later with her 19th point, putting Drury up by double-digits. McMillin then earned her way to the free throw line, connected with one to make it a ten point deficit. The next offensive possession for the Jets, McMillin connected with a three to cut it to seven. McMillin then found Delainey Wylie underneath the basket which sent  Wylie to the line, connecting with her first points of the night. With 5:31 to go, Grampsas found Craft cutting to the basket to put the Jets within four points. After the Panthers connected with two free throws, the Jets took an offensive rebound and with a three by Pierce to close the gap to just three with 5:03 to go. This basket by the Jets, forced Drury to take a timeout. After the timeout, the Panthers scored first, another bucket by Gibbons. McMillin once again answered the call, scoring her 20th point to put the game at 65-62. With three minutes to play, Wylie connected with a three to tie the game at 65 all. Wylie then hit another three on the next possession which took the lead from the Panthers. The Panthers found their way to the line, connecting with one to tie it at 68 all with just over two minutes to play. With two minutes left to play, the Jets were in the bonus. This sent Redondo to the line, where she connected with both to retake the lead. The Panthers tied it back up. Then the next Jets offensive possession, a pick and roll with Craft and Lioukina connected for the two point lead. The Jets then forced an offensive foul on the Panthers with 55 seconds to go, giving the Jets the ball, the lead, and free throws. Lioukina connected with these free throws to give Newman the lead at 74-70 with just 40 seconds left. The Jets were able to come up with a stop with 30 seconds left. This stop sent McMillin to the line where she connected with one to put the lead at 75-70. The Jets defense came up with another stop, forcing Drury to foul Grampsas. Grampsas hit both to make it a seven point game with 19 seconds left. The Panthers banked in a three with 12 seconds left. Drury then fouled Craft, sending her to the line where she hit both to clinch the win for the Jets. Newman took the win, 79-73.

- McMillin led the Jets with 21 points with five rebounds.
- Craft added 16 points with four assists.
- Lioukina scored 14 points, going 6-10 from the field. 
- Pierce tallied ten points. 

The Jets are back on December 5th in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to face Northeastern State to kick off conference play.
