WICHITA- The Jets hosted day two of the MIAA/GAC Challenge. Yesterday, the Jets faced Arkansas Monticello where they lost, 47-73. The Jets faced the Southern Arkansas Muleriders on day two, and fell just short at 58-50.
How it Happened:
-Southern Arkansas started the game off with an 8-2.
Delainey Wylie put a three in with 5:23 to go to stop this run and make the game 8-5 in favor of the Muleriders. Multiple defensive stops in a row led to a
Jaeden McMillin three to tie the game at 8 all with three minutes left in the first quarter. Monica Redono connected on a three with over a minute to play to give the Jets the 12-10 lead. The Jets defense was making the Muleriders offense struggle. McMillin went to the line with 46 seconds left and sank both free throws to give the Jets a four point lead. The Jets went into the quarter break with the lead at 14-10. McMillin had seven of the Jets 14 points in the quarter.
-In the second quarter, the Muleriders started out with a run of their own to tie the game up at 14 all. The Muleriders were then awarded with free throws where they sank them both to take the lead at 16-14. McMillin struck back with a jumper of her own to tie the game up at 16. This gave the Jets offense some juice to where they were able to build a 23-16 lead after McMillin scored five and Wylie added some free throws. The Muleriders weren't giving in and found themselves back within just three points at 23-20. McMillin continued her hot shooting and extended the Jets lead back to five at 25-20 with under two minutes to play. The Muleriders were able to take the lead with 23 seconds left in the half after being awarded an and one. Before the buzzer,
Monica Redondo found the back of the glass and put the Jets on top heading into the half at 27-26. In the first half, McMillin added 16 of the Jets 27 points.
-The Muleriders were first to score in the third quarter, but a
Saige Grampsas three gave the Jets the lead again at 30-28. Southern Arkansas kept battling and was able to tie it back up at 30 all. McMillin cconnected again on the offensive end with a three that put the Jets back on top. The next possession,
Valeriya Lioukina grabbed the offense board and put it back for two to extend the Jets lead to five. Grampsas hit her second three of the night with five minutes left in the 3rd quarter to put the Jets lead at six. The Muleriders were then able to tie the game at 39 all before the end of the 3rd quarter after the Jets went on a scoring drought to end the quarter. The Muleriders won the quarter, 13-12.
-The Muleriders took their momentum into the fourth quarter. Southern Arkansas found themselves with their biggest lead of the game at 54-45 with four minutes left in the game. Grampsas stopped the Muleriders run with another three to make it 54-38.
Layla Pierce got into the scoring action on the Jets end and hit a layup to make the game within four points at 54-50. Southern Arkansas was then able to go on a 4-0 run to make it a 58-50 game with under a minute left. Though the Jets battled it out until the end, Newman dropped the game 58-50.
Player Notes:
-McMillin led the Jets with 20 points off of 7-16 from the floor, adding seven rebounds.
-Redondo added 11 points and three assists.
The Jets return to Fugate Gymnasium on Monday, November 11th at 5:30 PM to face Central Christian.
