Last Time Out
Men's Basketball competed in their first two MIAA matchups of the 2024-25 season last week. Their first conference game was against Northeastern State in Tahlequah on Thursday. The Jets dominated both halves, leading to a final 85-66 score. While five different Jets were able to get double digit points, Jordan Glenn-Hawkins and Isaiah Elmore were the ones that stood out the most. Elmore totaled 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 8 points. Jordan led the team in points with 17 and added 9 assists as well in the 28 minutes he played. The Jets faced the UAFS Lions on Saturday. Newman was down 32-34 at halftime, but after a strong second half the Jets came back to win the game 70-67. Sam Somerhalder had an outstanding performance with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Boston Stanton III and Jaden Gales both got double digit points.
Scouting the Jets
-The Jets move to 2-0 for the first time in the MIAA era. The last time Newman won their first two conference games was in the 2017-18 season when they played in the Heartland Conference.
-Sam Somerhalder leads the Jets in points with 18, averaging 10.9 per game. He is second in rebounds with 35 and second in assists with 22.
-Isaiah Elmore totals the most rebounds on the team with 43, averaging 6.1 per game. He's also contributed with 36 points and 15 assists.
Behind Enemy Lines
The Spurgeon Knights are 8-2 this season. They have scored over 100 points in every single one of their wins. Their highest scoring win was at Southeastern Baptist College outscoring them 122-65. The Knights are led in offense by #0 Joseph Allen who accumulates 143 points, 50 rebounds, and 14 assists. Before facing Newman, Spurgeon with play Barclay College in a conference matchup.
William Jewell is 4-5 in the season so far. Despite winning their opening GLVC game against the University of Illinois Springfield, the Cardinals are 1-2 in conference play, having lost the last two games they've played. They lost to Rockhurst 64-70 on Thursday and to Southwest Baptist 59-74 on Saturday. The Cardinals will play Fort Hays State on Saturday before heading to Wichita to play the Jets.
Southwest Baptist holds a 5-3 record overall and a 3-1 record in conference. The Bearcats have won their last two games including a 74-59 win against William Jewell on Saturday afternoon. Their highest scoring win was against Ozark Christian College with a final 84-62 score. The Bearcats will play a non-conference game against William Baptist College before facing Newman. Mitch Ganote leads SBU in offense with 132 points, averaging 16.5 per game. He also adds 38 assists and 39 rebounds.
The Series
-Since joining NCAA DII, the Jets have never faced Spurgeon.
-The Jets have met up with the Cardinals five times. Newman has won 4 out of the 5. The Cardinals won their last matchup 77-90.
-Newman has only faced SBU once, back in 2006. The Bearcats took the game 100-66.
