Men’s Basketball downs the Cardinals, 63-55

WICHITA- The Jets hosted the Cardinals for the last home game of 2024. Last time out, the Jets defeated Spurgeon where Jordan Glenn-Hawkins led the Jets with 18 points. This time out, the Jets took down the Cardinals, 63-55,  to extend their win streak to four.

How it Happened:

- The Jets started off the game with an 11-0 run. Newman hit the board first with a three-pointer by Boston Stanton III. The Cardinals quickly responded with a bucket on their end on the next possession. Sam Medalie scored his first bucket with a layup to take the Jets up 5-2. Jordan Glenn-Hawkins then hit two free throws off of a defensive rebound that he pushed into a fast-break opportunity. The Cardinals then hit from range to cut the deficit, but Sam Somerhalder answered with a layup of his own to keep the Jets offense flowing. At the first media timeout, the Jets had the lead at 13-5. After the first media timeout, the Cardinals were able to put a run together where they brought the game within one point at 15-14, still in the Jets favor. Then, the Jets went on a quick 5-0 run to extend their lead to six at the second media timeout. The Cardinals rallied again with back-to-back buckets that brought them within three points with under four minutes to go. Devin Walker then completed a three-point play after a tough layup in the pain to retake the Jets lead to six. The Cardinals responded with a three to make it a three-point game with three minutes left in the half. Newman then put a run together with points by Stanton III, Walker, and Deadric Fikes to help put the Jets up eight at the end of the first half.
- Out of the halftime break, William Jewell was able to go on a 10-1 run to take the lead from the Jets at 36-35 with just under 15 minutes left to play. Aaron Murphy started to get the Jets offense going with a fast-break layup after a Walker steal. Walker and Fikes then scored on back-to-back possessions by the Jets, but the Cardinals were able to stay in stride with the Jets. Two quick buckets before the second media timeout put Newman up 46-42 with just under ten minutes to play. Out of the timeout, William Jewell hit a three to bring it within one point. Somerhalder and Murphy then scored on back-to-back buckets to retake the six-point lead. The Cardinals wouldn't budge, hitting another three to keep the game within reach. At the final media timeout, Newman had the 51-48 lead. William Jewell was able to cut that lead to two with a free throw, but the Jets rallied and pushed the lead out to five points after a layup and free throw by Isaiah Elmore. The Cardinals then went on a 4-0 run that made it a one-point game with 1:37 left to play. A clutch offensive rebound dunk putback by Thatcher McClure gave the Jets a lot of energy with just over a minute left. After this dunk, Murphy scored a layup and a free throw to extend the Jets lead to six points with 14 seconds left. Free throws by Fikes, and Stanton III helped the Jets close out the game.
