WICHITA - Newman Softball hosted Friends for their first home doubleheader of the season, in games that saw high flying offense from the Jets.
Newman was coming off their best start to a season in program history, beginning with a 5-2 record, including a series win over East Central and three wins in Arkansas last weekend.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Newman, but was moved to Two Rivers Youth Softball Complex Tuesday evening.
Game 1:
The Jets were coming off of a three game winning streak, and they showed their confidence early in the first game scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a left field single by Lauren Kwak, who led the Jets in offense in the first game.
The Jets would overcome an early deficit, after going down 5-3 to the Falcons in the third inning.
Lauren Kwak homered for the first time this season in the third inning, leading to three more runs that left the Jets with a 6-5 lead.
After that third inning lead, Newman would score two runs in the fifth and sixth inning assisted by hits from Gianna Navarro, Lauren McNaught, Kwak and Tori Waggoner to leave a final score of 10-6, giving the Jets a 10-6 win.
Jackie Gold had an impressive performance in the circle, earning her fourth straight win and pitching through all seven innings. Kwak would go three of four along with her home run.
Hayley Bonython had another solid outing hitting, going two of three from the plate and scoring two runs.
Game 2:
The Falcons hadn't said their last word and they started the second game with three runs. The Jets fought back and scored four after a left field double from Kwak, an error from the Falcons first base, and ground out to shortstop from Alex Schreiner.
The Jets scored again in the second inning after another error from first base to increase their lead, but they wouldn't score again until the seventh inning when Anissa Ramos homered to left center for her first home run of the season.
Friends' offense was too much for Newman's defense, and even three different pitchers couldn't stop the Falcons momentum.
The Jets will travel to Bethany, Oklahoma next Tuesday to play a double header against Southern Nazarene.
