Senior DayÂ
Women's Basketball will host Emporia State for the last Saturday gameday in Fugate, as Newman will celebrate the careers and accomplishments of two seniors from the program.Â
Thank you, Seniors!
Carissa Beck and Amiya Josey will play in one of their final home contests for Newman on Saturday.Â
From Towanda, Kansas, Carissa Beck joined the Women's Basketball team in 2021, and incredibly has started every game in her Newman career. Making all 28 starts the last two seasons and having started in all 23 games this season, Beck is averaging 8.1 points per game in 2023/24. One of Beck's most notable accomplishments for Newman was breaking the single game three point record against Manhattan Christian, where she made 10 three pointers and scored 30 points.Â
From Gilbert, Arizona, Amiya Josey closes her Newman journey after two seasons with the Jets. While making just several starts in 2022/23, Josey has started in every game this season. Bringing new meaning to the phrase "super senior", Josey has come on strong over the past month or so, including having career nights against Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney. In those games, she broke her career high in points against the Tigers with 18, and tied that mark against the Lopers just two days later.Â
Last Time OutÂ
The ladies almost got an upset win over Nebraska Kearney last Saturday, coming so close to getting their second conference win on the road this season.Â
The Jets got on the board early with multiple three pointers, which challenged the Lopers lead but never took it away. A Carissa Beck three tied the game at 13, but after a streaky 9-0 scoring run, the Jets found themselves down 22-17, but not before a 4-0 run from Amiya Josey in the last minute of the quarter.Â
Another UNK scoring run put them by 11, but back to back threes from Amiya Josey put Newman right back into the game.Â
Josey had nine points in the second quarter, helping her tie her career high in points later in the afternoon.Â
But, once again, the Lopers went on a third scoring run, their third of the half, to put themselves up by 11 again.Â
With the Jets having one of their best three point shooting days of the year, they made a good portion of them in the fourth quarter, with Jaeden McMillin nailing two and Monica Redondo adding one more.Â
Wylie scored two three pointers in quick succession to give the Lopers a major scare, with Newman down by just three. Some late free throws saw the Lopers get a nail biting victory, 81-76.Â
Wylie Blocking Services
Freshman Delainey Wylie now has a firm grip on the blocking lead title in the MIAA, who now has 48 blocks in 23 games.Â
Behind Enemy LinesÂ
Coming off a two game losing streak, Emporia State limps into Wichita with their MIAA tournament hopes on the line.Â
Currently clinging on to ninth place, the Hornets are 7-10 in conference play.Â
ESU has only won on the road twice this season, with the two narrow victories coming over Lincoln and Rogers State.Â
The SeriesÂ
The Jets are 5-10 all time against the Hornets, but picked up their first conference win of the season at Emporia in January, with the Jets winning 68-58.Â
The two teams are 2-2 against each other in the last four meetings.Â
Upcoming AttractionsÂ
The Jets head out on their final roadtrip against Northeastern State and Rogers State next week, and will host their final home game of the season against Missouri Western for Homecoming on February 29th.
