Jets lock down on defense in second half against Hillcats

Hold Rogers State to 33% from the field

CLAREMORE, Okla. - In a second straight game where the Newman defense held their opponents to under 35%, the Jets finished up their Oklahoma road trip against Rogers State on Saturday.

Newman had allowed only five field goals in the second half against Northeastern State on Thursday, and once again played some excellent defense, allowing no more than six made field goals in a quarter against Rogers State. As with the last game however, the Hillcats had more opportunities at the free throw line, which was the deciding factor.

Amaya Perez scored Newman's first four points of the game, taking the lead early on the road. For the first five minutes, Newman only allowed two points as both teams tried to find different ways to score. Both teams fell short of making their shots, which led to a long scoreless drought for both.

Carissa Beck's three point shooting kept Newman in the game, but a scoring drought at the end of the second quarter gave Rogers State an eight point lead at halftime.

The scoring drought carried over into the third quarter, where it was Beck's third three that got them in the board for the first time in the second half.

While the Jets played tough defense and allowed the fewest field goals in the third quarter, they also sent the Hillcats to the line for a game high eleven free throw attempts, where the home team made eight of the attempts.

More excellent defense from the Jets came in the final quarter, but could not convert on opportunities to cut into the Rogers State lead. Despite the effort, the Hillcats defeated the Jets, 59-39.

Beck finished with eleven points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.

Delainey Wylie finished with three blocks on her road to be crowned as the MIAA's blocking leader at the end of the regular season.

The Jets will host their annual homecoming game next Thursday, taking on Missouri Western, which will also mark the final home game of the season.
