WICHITA - Despite a bright start in the first half, Men's Basketball could not overcome a large deficit they faced throughout most of the second half against Missouri Western.
Celebrating homecoming, Newman was hoping to get some revenge on the Griffons after losing on the road in St. Joseph a month ago.
Sam Somerhalder had an electric start to his game, scoring five of Newman's first nine points. Another sharp shooter early in the game was
Jacob Joe, who's three pointer gave Newman one of their biggest leads of the game.
The Griffons really got to work in the paint, and would overcome several lost leads to take a double digit lead over the Jets at halftime.
Even with some brief spurts of fast offense, Newman never got back within single digits of the lead. Somerhalder and
Boston Stanton III would have another big half as it seemed they would score whenever the Navy and Red were on the cusp of going on a longer run.
In about the span of just two minutes, the Griffons lead went from just over ten points to the game's biggest lead of twenty one.
It did not help matters that Newman only scored two field goals in the last five minutes. At this point, Newman had gone on multiple 6-0 runs, but the momentum would stop dead in its track when the Griffons responded with a big shot.
Missouri Western spoiled homecoming celebrations with a 86-68 win over Newman.
Somerhalder and Stanton III each had sixteen points. Somerhalder only missed two shot attempts making all seven of his other shots.
The Jets will conclude their season on Saturday afternoon, where they will take on Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
