Hit the Road, Jets!

Women's Basketball heads out on their final Thursday/Saturday road trip of the season, taking on in-state rival Fort Hays State and taking on a former coach at Nebraska-Kearney.

Last Time Out

The Jets had a tough outing against Pittsburg State, with the Gorillas sweeping the Jets.

With the Gorillas starting on a 12-0 run, Newman got their first three points on the board thanks to an and one scoring play from freshman star Jaeden McMillin. The Jets struggled to find consistent offense in the rest of the quarter, as the Gorillas continued to push their advantage.

The fourth quarter would be the best in the game for Newman, shooting about 40% from the field. The Gorillas seemed to have gotten lucky with some shots and shot over 40% total on the day. They also hit 11 three pointers in the contest.

Freshman Blockbuster

With seven blocks this past week, Delainey Wylie moves just one block shy of tying the conference lead for most blocked shots in the MIAA. With 42 blocks and averaging 2 blocks a game, Wylie has smashed the single season blocking record for Newman as a freshman.

Behind Enemy Lines

Coming in at #15 last week, but possibly dropping down the ladder after two losses last weekend, is Fort Hays State. The Tigers are third in the MIAA standings with a 10-5 conference record.

They had a chance of taking first place last weekend, but with losses to Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State, they have fallen to third.

Despite the losses, the Tigers have defeated a few top 25 teams this season, including a win over #2 Minnesota State to start the year.

The Tigers boasts the MIAA's best defense, allowing just 56.3 points a game.

The Tigers are lead by Katie Wagner, who with 348 points, is fifth in the MIAA in points.

Nebraska Kearney sits in seventh place and come in with a 15-6 record. The Lopers went 1-1 last weekend and while they recovered from a three game losing streak in January, they are far from the top of the pack where the team is generally expected to be.

The game against Newman will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Saturday.

The Series

The Jets are 1-16 all time against the Tigers, with Newman on a 15 game losing streak against the Tigers. Fort Hays won the last meeting earlier this season, 85-35.

The Jets are 1-10 against UNK, with the Lopers winning the last seven. The Lopers won the last meeting in Wichita, 69-42, in December.

Upcoming Attraction

The Jets will host Emporia State for Senior Day on February 17th at 1:30 PM.
