HAYS, Ks. - Men's Basketball had a tough outing on the road Thursday night, taking on a tough Fort Hays State team. The Tigers are one of the top teams in the MIAA, currently sitting in second place.
The Jets had pulled off one of their biggest wins of the season against the Tigers in December, and were looking for the clean sweep over the Tigers.
Marred by yet another slow start, the Jets struggled to get into the game in the first half, missing their first seven field goal attempts of the game.
The Tigers went up by as many as 15 in the half, but Newman got some traction going behind
Boston Stanton III. Stanton IIi had eleven points in the first half, as he helped the Jets find some much needed offense.
Some momentum swung the Jets way right at the buzzer, as
Jacob Joe hit just the second three pointer by Newman in the first half to bring Newman to just a few possessions of the lead, with the score at 30-24 in favor of the Tigers.
All the momentum the Jets thought they had was lost early on in the second half as it seemed like the Tigers couldn't miss. Stanton was guarded heavily as the Jets couldn't seem to gain traction.
Coming off the bench,
Latik Murphy got five quick points, but it just wasn't enough to trouble the Tigers lead.
Fort Hays State went on to win 66-45.
Besides Stanton III, no other Jet had more than eight points. Stanton led all scorers at half time, but was unable to score in the second half.
Thomas Zevgaras had eight points in the second half, along with four rebounds.
The Jets will travel to Nebraska Kearney on Saturday, hoping to get their first conference sweep of the season.
