HAYS, Ks. - Senior
Amiya Josey had a career night in a close conference game Thursday, with the Tigers escaping with a victory late by going on several scoring runs in the second half.
The two had faced off earlier in the conference season, with the Tigers scoring a big victory in Wichita. This game would be much different, as the Jets gave the Tigers a tough battle through most of the game.
With the Tigers looking like they might break away early with a 10-4 start, the Jets turned into a different gear with two
Amiya Josey three pointers giving Newman a two point lead following an 8-0 run.
Josey would have an incredible start to her night, going nearly perfect from the field in the first half and going three of three from beyond the arc.
Overall, the Jets shot at an outstanding rate in the first quarter, shooting over 55% from three and 57.1% overall to open the game.
A 7-2 run from Newman, with all the points coming from Josey, to open the second quarter gave the Jets their biggest lead of the day. The Jets had a eight point lead with just 90 seconds remaining, but the Tigers got the game leveled as the buzzer expired.
The half was tied for the most points the Jets had scored in the opening half in the MIAA this season with 35.
Josey continued with her hot hand scoring the first points of the second half. The Tigers, however, would go on one of their two major runs in the second half which would help them secure the win.
A
Monica Redondo three pointer got the Jets out of the hole, with Newman trailing by just one point after going down eight early in the third.
Newman would get the game tied at 50, but it was the last time they would have any momentum, as one final push from the Tigers gave them the largest lead that either team had in the game. With the late push, the Tigers won 76-57.
Josey had a career night, scoring her most points in a Newman uniform with 18 points.
Freshman,
Jaeden McMillin, who made her first career start, had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
Delainey Wylie may be the top blocker in the MIAA after this weekend's game, after getting 2 blocks.
The Jets will head to Nebraska Kearney on Saturday, with tipoff scheduled for 2 PM.
