WICHITA - Newman Softball played in their second consecutive conference doubleheader at home Sunday afternoon, taking on Washburn. The Ichabods controlled the first game from beginning to end, but the second game was much closer and had the Jets leading for a majority of the contest.
Like the Emporia State doubleheader, the games were postponed due to rain during the week.
Game 1
With the Ichabods scoring a home run at one of the first at bats, the momentum favored Washburn throughout the entire game.
The Jets pitchers would be frustrated, as they would get two outs quickly but would not be able to find a third elusive out to retire the sides in several consecutive innings.
Following a
Lauren Kwak double in the third inning, Hayley Boneython and Madison Canez scored the first two runs of the day for Newman.
This bright moment was outdone by an impressive inning from the Ichabods, who scored five runs in the top of the fifth.
AJ Borja's triple gave Newman some life with the run rule soon to come into play. She would score at the next at bat after
Gianna Navarro nailed a double into right center. The next three batters unfortunately either flied or struck out to give Washburn a 16-3 win after five innings.
Two of the four hits came from Navarro, while
Lauren Kwak had two RBIs.
Game 2
Just like the second game on Saturday against the Hornets, Newman started on fire in the opening inning of the game.
Hayley Bonython's home run scored two runs and was the second of five hits in the inning. Borja would add another after
Malie Noda singled to left field.
It was a defensive struggle for most of the game as neither team would budge any big offensive plays. However, an Ichabods home run in the fourth started to turn the tide of the game.
Another run would score in the sixth, but thanks to pitching from
Paola Zamacona, got the Jets out of a tight situation with runners on second and third.
A home run that hit off the score board tied the game from Washburn in the seventh. With two outs, the Ichabods were able to get the fourth run of the game off of a double to give them their first lead of the game at 4-3.
A Canez double gave the Jets some hope, but a huge double play to get the final two outs sealed the game for Washburn.
Zamacona pitched for six of the seven innings, shutting out the Washburn through most of her day.
Canez, Noda and Borja each had two hits in the close loss, Bonython's home run to open the game was her fourth of the season.
The Jets will be back at home on Tuesday, hosting University of Mary for midweek doubleheader.
