Game Recap: Softball |

Softball sweeps Marauders as Gold and Zamacona pitch complete games

Noda finishes with 4 RBIs in game one

WICHITA - Newman Softball completed a sweep over University of Mary on Tuesday, winning big in the first game and notching multiple runs with the game tied late in the second contest.

It was the first sweep of the season for the Jets, as they have now won three out of their last five at home.

Game 1

After a defensive battle in the first few innings of the game, Newman broke through first and would not stop scoring. A Lauren McNaught single brought AJ Borja in for the first of eleven runs scored by the Jets.

Four runs off of five hits in the third gave Newman a 5-0 advantage, being capped off with another McNaught single that scored Lauren Kwak

Malie Noda had a superb game, finishing with two hits and four RBIs. One of the RBIs came in the third, allowing Hayley Bonython to score.

The Marauders attempted a comeback, and for a while the game was close again with the Jets still leading 5-3.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Noda and the Jets slammed the door shut on the game when her double scored all three runners on base. Noda herself would add the eleventh run coming off a Kayla Lopez single.

Mary got a crucial run to prevent the game from ending early via the run rule, but senior pitcher Jackie Gold was able to shut down any progress the Marauders hoped to make in the final two innings.

Gold pitched the entire game, striking out five and allowing only one walk. The win was her fifth of the season.

Game 2

The Jets picked up where they left off in the first game, taking the lead early. Gianna Navarro scored following a Bonython single, while Madi Canez scored off of an error from the first baseman.

Unlike the last time when Mary went on a run to close the gap on the lead, the Marauders tied the game and even took the lead for a brief time in the fourth inning.

That lead would not last for long, as another single from Navarro scored the tying run.

The Jets finally retook the lead in the sixth, scoring the four deciding runs of the game.

The sixth was topped off from with back to back doubles from Bonython and Borja, with each scoring a run. The Jets went on to get the late win, 7-3.

Paola Zamacona earned her third win of the season, going the distance in the game from start to finish. She struck out two and kept the Jets in the game with a few strikeouts.

The Jets will take on McPherson on Thursday, with the rescheduled doubleheader beginning at 1 pm in McPherson.
