MCPHERSON, KS - Newman Softball had a big day against McPherson College Thursday afternoon, as the Jets won both games behind some impressive hitting.

The games were originally scheduled to be played at Newman in February, but were postponed due to weather. All four of Newman's games against NAIA opponents have been moved off campus this season.

Game 1

It was a slow start for the Jets in the first game of the afternoon. The Bulldogs took a quick two run lead in the first inning and added another in the third while keeping the Jets quiet.

It would take until the fifth inning for Newman to respond, and they did so in one of the most impressive ways possible.

Following an error from the Bulldogs pitcher, Kayla Lopez scored the Jets first run to get them back into the game.

The bases would then be loaded, and one of the biggest plays of Newman's season was about to unfold.

Hayley Bonython hit her fifth home run of the season and it wasn't an average one either. Bonython's grand slam was Newman's first of the season, as the first baseman added a 4 RBI game to her impressive debut season with the Navy and Red. The bomb gave Newman their first lead of the day, as they lead 5-3.

Newman wasn't done hitting home runs either, as a AJ Borja solo home run gave the Jets some breathing room and a three run lead.

McPherson had a solo home run of their own in the sixth, but the Jets saw the rest of the game out to win, 6-4.

Bonython went a perfect four of four at the plate, while seven other Jets had at least one hit.

Kinyon DeCorte earned her third win of the year, striking out seven in the process.

Game 2

The Jets had a smoother start to the game in the second contest of the day. A big third inning proved to be the difference, with singles from Navarro and Canez each scoring a run. In between those first two runs, Anissa Ramos scored off of a passed ball.

The Bulldogs responded with one run in the fourth, but Newman kept getting into positions that lead to runs.

Two more singles from Kaitlyn Praught and Malie Noda scored two more  and yet another single from Canez in the sixth gave Newman a comfortable lead.

A brief fight back from the Bulldogs ensued, but a Kayla Lopez single in the ninth scored one more run, which was enough to see Newman secure their second straight sweep.

Five Jets had two hits in the game, which lead to five RBIs.

Zoe Fulks earned the win against the Bulldogs, while Paola Zamacona claimed her first save of the season.

The Jets will be off this weekend, but will return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State.
