WICHITA - Newman hosted Missouri Western in a second consecutive home conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Jets came back to action after a challenging double header against the Northwest Missouri Bearcats on Friday afternoon. Despite having a total of twelve hits, the Jets weren't able to convert them into runs.
The first game was very close and competitive up until the sixth inning where the Griffons scored two runs to distance themselves enough from the Jets. Newman dominated the second game with a great performance from Senior Jackie Gold and a very strong bottom of the second inning that saw the Jets score four runs
Game 1:
Newman started the first game strong, scoring a tying run and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning. Malie Noda's single to right field scored Hayley Bonython to respond to the first run scored by the Griffons in the top of the first.
The second and third inning went scoreless with both teams displaying great defense.
The Jets tried different ways of scoring, leaving a total of ten runners on base throughout the game but a good defensive performance from the Griffons stopped them every time they got close.
Despite getting the loss, Zoe Fulks had a solid performance adding three strikeouts.
The Griffons went on to score three runs in the last two innings to claim the first win of the doubleheader.
Game 2:
The Jets completely dominated the second game from beginning to end.
Senior Jackie Gold had a phenomenal performance accumulating seven strikeouts and only allowing six hits and one run in the seven innings she pitched. With that performance, Gold earned her seventh win of the season.
The Jets took the lead early in the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. A walk, a hit by pitch, and a single to left field by Gianna Navarro assisted the runs.
Following Gold's defensive leadership, Hayley Bonython singled to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to score Madi Canez and Kayla Lopez, making the gap between both teams even bigger.
A sacrifice bunt from Kaitlyn Praught scored Hayley Bonython to add the final run of the game for the Jets and leave a final 7-1 score.
Up Next:
The Jets will be back on Tuesday March 26th hosting a non-conference doubleheader against Southern Nazarene with game one starting at 2 PM.
