WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Newman Women's Bowling competed at their second ever GLVC tournament this weekend, making it all the way to the championship round against Maryville.

Prior to the tournament, postseason honors were announced. In all, 15 student-athletes earned All-GLVC recognition, while six were named GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees, and Newman University was honored with the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award.

The All-Conference awards are nominated and voted on by league coaches, who, per GLVC Bylaws, are not permitted to vote for their own players.

Newman University junior Kensley Morris and University of Central Missouri junior Andrea Perez Perez joined a Maryville Saints trio on the All-GLVC First Team.

Newman earned this year's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award, while six student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized. These individuals must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Once tournament time rolled around, the Jets, the two seed in the tournament, received a bye to the second round.

No. 2 NEWMAN (1004, 1045) def. No. 3 MCKENDREE (920, 892), 2-0
Facing off with McKendree, the Jets were able to defeat the Bearcats handily to open tournament play. Kassidy Miller notched a 226 game to lead the Jets in the traditional format round, helping the Jets win the first leg, 1004-920. In the baker leg, Newman averaged 209 pins a game, including two 230-plus games.

No. 2 NEWMAN (1080, 960, 4) def. No. 1 MARYVILLE (1055, 982, 1), 2-1
On Saturday, the Jets squared off with top-seeded Maryville. Saturday's meeting turned out to be the first of three times that the two would face off against each other in the tournament. Newman had four players reach the 200 mark in the traditional round, with Alexis Shea (248) and Carianne Takeuchi (244) leading the way. The Saints were able to get a narrow victory in the five-game baker round, winning 982-960, but a strong response from the Jets, shooting 195-plus in all five games of the best-of-seven baker, propelled the Jets to their second consecutive GLVC Championship appearance and a shot at an automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament.

MATCH 10 (Championship)
No. 1 MARYVILLE (900, 1065, 4.5) def. No. 2 NEWMAN (930, 917, 2.5), 2-1
On Sunday morning, the Saints set up a rematch with Newman after defeating Lewis in the elimination round. The Jets started the championship round with a 30-pin traditional victory, with Kassidy Miller posting a 234 individual mark. However, Maryville took the final two legs of the megamatch, forcing a winner take all best-of-seven baker series to decide the GLVC's champion.

BEST-OF-SEVEN BAKER SERIES (If Necessary Match)
No. 1 MARYVILLE def. No. 2 NEWMAN, 4-0
Maryville captured the championship crown over the Jets with a 4-0 series win..

Two Jets, Kassidy Miller and Alexis Shea were named to the all-tournament team. The pair made up two of six bowlers at the tournament to be named with the honors.
