Softball completes two comebacks to sweep Cardinals

Aj Borja hits second home run of the season

Liberty, Mo. -Newman completed two seventh inning comebacks to sweep the William Jewell Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon. The Jets were able to score multiple runs in both games seventh inning to secure wins in the last two non-conference games of the season.

Softball was coming back to action after a tough matchup against the #4 Rogers State Hillcats. The Jets were outmatched by the powerful Hillcat offense and saw both games go to only five innings. Despite the results, Newman had some great moments in what was an emotional day for the Jets who were celebrating Senior Day.

Game 1:
The first game started with two scoreless innings with both teams testing each other out.

The Cardinals were the first ones to score, adding four runs off of a fielding error and a couple of singles in the bottom of the third. That would be the only inning in the game the Jets allowed the Cardinals to score.

The Jets were able to answer in the top of the fourth inning, but only with one run after a single from Lauren McNaught singled to shortstop to score Malie Noda. The Jets were able to leave two runners on base.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Jets scored two more runs in the sixth inning off of a hit by pitch to Lauren McNaught that scored Malie Noda, again, and a sacrifice fly out to right field from Anissa Ramos that scored Aj Borja. The Jets left two runners on base again but ended the inning within one run from the Cardinals.

A single up the middle from Aj Borja scored the tying and the leading run in the top of the seventh inning. Kayla Lopez joined the batting party with a single down the left field line that scored the final run.

Jackie Gold got the win, making it her ninth of the season. Gold kept the Jets in the game only allowing five hits and accumulating three strikeouts.

Game 2:
After a last inning loss, the Cardinals came out to the field looking for revenge. They scored a run in the bottom of the first inning after a throwing error to take an early lead.

Aj Borja didn't allow them to enjoy the lead too long after she hit a home run to left center to tie the game in the top of the second. That's Aj Borja's second homer of the season.

After a third inning with no runs, the Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and another one in the bottom of the fifth to claim their second lead of the game.

Once again, the Jets had the best saved for last. A double from Rylee Gresham scored two runs to tie the game up once again in the top of the seventh. A single to center field from Kayla Lopez scored the leading run. And a double from Hayley Bonython scored Lopez to wrap up the comeback.

Kinyon DeCorte earned the win after only allowing two runs and accumulating two strikeouts. It's her fifth win of the season.

Jackie Gold earned her first save of the season after she came in for an inning to stop the Cardinals attempt to come back. She didn't allow any hits or runs in the inning she pitched.
