Wilson strikes out eight in home finale against Gorillas

Thirteen seniors were celebrated before game

WICHITA - Newman Baseball struggled on offense in their final home game of the season against Pittsburg State, but decent pitching kept them in the game for a majority of the contest as the Jets still chase a berth in the MIAA Tournament.

The Gorillas narrowly escaped Newman in the second game of the series on Saturday, winning 10-8.

Before Sunday's game, twelve baseball student athletes and one manager were celebrated for their contributions to Newman Baseball. Many of the seniors saw action today in what would be their final home game of their careers in Navy and Red.

Colby Wilson had one of his best outings of the season, striking out eight batters in five innings of work. His efforts helped keep the Jets within a touching distance of the lead through the five innings.

The Jets couldn't find the offense that they have been known for this season, as they would not get a man on base until the fourth inning when senior Jason Schneider was walked. Joe Kinneberg followed in the inning with one of two hits in his final home game, but other than this Newman was rather quiet.

Most of Newman's looks from the plate didn't make it past the infield, and it wasn't until the later innings that they would get some looks in the outfield.

A three RBI home run from Pittsburg State in the eighth dampered any hopes of a Newman comeback, as they would get a rare shutout over a usually hard hitting Newman offense.

Although the Jets couldn't grab a win this weekend, they still have a shot at the eight seed after other results in the MIAA meant that every team was still alive for a postseason opportunity.

Next weekend's series against Emporia State will be one of the more important series the Jets have been apart of this season, as three wins could go a long way to booking their second straight trip to the MIAA tournament.
