BETHANY, Okla.- The Jets finished day two of tournament play against Southern Nazarene and Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Game one Southern Nazarene: How It Happened
- Set one the Jets came out with energy and were executing early at the net. McKenna Rhodes had three early kills to help put the Jets on top early at 8-5. The Jets continued their offensive push, led by Rhodes, to make it a 12-9 lead in favor of the Jets which forced the Crimson Storm to take their first timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Jets never let SNU take the momentum away from them and kept pushing their lead. Newman led 18-11, forcing SNU to take their second timeout. The Crimson Storm tried to string a run together, but the Jets held strong. Newman had a dominant showing at the net, hitting 58.6 % as a team. The Jets took set one, 25-17.
- In the second set it was a back and forth battle, with two early lead changes. However, the Jets put on a run to make the set 10-6, making SNU take their first timeout of the set. The Crimson Storm made a run to make it a one point contest at 19-18. However, the Jets never gave up the lead and went on to win set two, 25-20.
- The Crimson Storm jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the third set, four of those Bulldog points were due to errors by the Jets. SNU took the momentum early in the set, and kept pushing their lead. The Jets rallied back from a nine point hole, scoring four points in a row to cut the lead to 13-8. The Jets could never quite cut the deficit and lost the third set, 25-12.
- SNU kept their momentum from the third set and stole the lead early. Though the Jets were down early, 14-9, they recorded 8 kills which matched SNU's total. The hitting errors early on by the Jets showed to be the difference. Newman started to connect on the offensive end, making it a one point game at 16-15 which made the Crimson Storm take a timeout. After the timeout, a huge block by Ozioma Ajekwu tied it up at 16 all. Though the Jets made great efforts to put together the comeback, they fell just short. SNU took set four, 25-20.
- In the 5th set, played to 15 points, the Crimson Storm started the game with a 4-0 run. Even with the early deficit, the Jets went on a run of their own to make it a two point game, 8-6. Newman couldn't complete the comeback in the 5th set, falling to the Crimson Storm 15-7.
-SNU takes the match, 3-2.
Player Notes:
- Grace Irwin with a double-double, tallying 46 assists and 16 digs. Setting her career high in both categories. Irwin also added three service aces, another career high.
- Rhodes dominated on the offensive end hitting 18 kills, setting her career high at Newman.
- Natalie Trigo with 24 digs.
Game two vs Southwestern Oklahoma State: How It Happened
- The Bulldogs started set one with a 10-5 lead. After the early lead for the Bulldogs, the Jets were never able to form a run to cut the deficit. The Jets recorded 7 kills on 28 attacking attempts and 5 errors which allowed SWOSU to take set one, 25-13.
- In set two, the Bulldogs took the early lead, but the Jets kept pushing back to keep the game within reach. Kills by Camdyn Kindred and Hannah Tymitz helped the Jets cut the game to a 5 point game at 13-8. The Bulldogs quickly rallied with a 4-2 run to extend their lead to 8. The Jets could never quite close the gap. In the second set, the Jets recorded only 9 kills and 37 attacking attempts. SWOSU took set two, 25-16.
- The Jets came out with a fight in the third set. The Bulldogs tried to take the early lead, but the Jets wouldn't allow it. The game was a back and forth battle until the Jets took the lead 12-11 and went on an 11-5 run to extend their lead to 22-16. After their run, the Jets never allowed the Bulldogs back into the game. As a team, the Jets tallied 15 kills to help lead them to a third set win, 25-17.
- The Jets took the momentum into the fourth set. It was a back and forth contest, but the Jets found themselves out front at 8-5 which created SWOSU to have to take their first timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Bulldogs caught some momentum and took the lead 14-10 which then caused the Jets to take a timeout to try and stop the momentum shift. After the Jets timeout, the Bulldogs kept their run going, extending their lead 20-14. The Jets couldn't put a run together in time, the Bulldogs took the fourth set, 25-16.
