Jets outmatched by No. 13 Pittsburg State

Women's Basketball drops conference home opener to Gorillas

WICHITA- The Jets hosted Pittsburg State for their conference home opener. The Gorillas are currently ranked No. 13 in WBCA rankings and No.12 in the D2CSC media poll. The Gorillas took the match-up, 77-50.

How it Happened:
-The ranked Gorillas squad got off to a hot start with a 10-0 run after forcing the Jets into early turnovers. This run by the Gorillas forced the Jets to take an early timeout at the 6:18 mark in the first quarter. The Gorillas were able to extend their lead to 13-0 before Paige Craft finally put the Jets on the board with a turnaround jumper at the 5:30 mark in the opening quarter. A few minutes later, Dani Williams scored the Jets second basket of the game. At the end of the first quarter, the Jets found themselves down 20-4.
-Out of the quarter break, the Gorillas were first to score to extend their lead. Monica Redondo scored the Jets first points of the quarter with a single free throw. Redondo then connected with a three a minute later to put the score at 22-8. The Jets offense then started to roll after Layla Pierce connected with a three to cut the score to a ten point lead with just under six minutes to play in the half. After the first media timeout of the quarter, Pierce connected with her second three-pointer of the game to keep the spread at just ten points. A few possessions later, Delainey Wylie sunk a three for the Jets to cut it to a 24-17 game with 3:19 left. The Gorillas were able to connect on an and-one opportunity the next possession to put it back at a ten point spread. The Gorillas were then able to extend their lead to 16 after a few missed shots on the Jets offensive end and a turnover. Heading into the halftime break, the Jets trailed 36-17. Pierce led the Jets with six points at the break.
-Craft was first to score in the second half for the Jets with her fourth point on the night. However, the Gorillas were able to answer with a three pointer. Jaeden McMillin joined the box score with a jumper to try to keep the Jets offense going, but the Gorillas continued to answer to keep the spread at 20 points. Saige Grampsas hit her first three of the night at the seven minute mark. McMillin then added a three-pointer of her own on the next Jets possession. Though the Jets were hitting shots, the Gorillas were too. This kept the lead well within the Gorillas hands. At the first media timeout of the half, the Jets trailed by just 15 points at 46-31. After this, the Gorillas went on a run and extended their lead to 58-36 to end the third quarter.
-The Jets continued to score on the offensive end in the final quarter, but had no answer on the defensive end. The Gorillas kept the Jets at a distance the entirety of the quarter. The Gorillas would take the win, 77-50.
