Fort Smith, Ark.- Newman Women's Basketball capped off their first weekend of play against Arkansas Monticello. The Jets battled, but fell short 61-54.
How it Happened:
- The Cotton Blossoms opened the game with a three-pointer, but
Monica Redondo answered with one of her own.
Valeriya Lioukina then put the Jets ahead 5-3. The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with Newman pulling ahead 14-9 after free throws by McMillin and a three from
Carli Carlson. McMillin added another bucket for a 16-9 lead before UAM went on a 6-2 run to make it 16-15.
Alexis Martin scored to extend the Jets lead, and a late UAM free throw made it 18-6 Newman after one.
- Out of the quarter break, a McMillin jumper and a Martin three pushed the Jets lead to 23-16. An 11-0 Newman run stretched it to 34-18, highlighted by five points from McMillin, a three by
Amaya Perez three, a free throw by
Dani Williams, and Martin's seventh point of the night. UAM answered with a 6–0 run to cut the lead to 34-24. In the final minute, Williams hit a free throw before the Cotton Blossoms scored to close the half. Newman led 35-26 at the break, with McMillin posting 12 points and Martin adding seven.
- UAM opened the third quarter with a 5–0 run to cut the Jets lead to four.
Paige Craft stopped the surge with a basket, making it 37-31 with under six minutes left. Newman held the lead throughout the quarter, but Alindsey Long's late bucket brought UAM within one, 45-44, heading into the fourth.
- UAM opened the fourth with an Alyssa Batton basket that sparked an 8-0 run, giving the Cotton Blossoms a 52-45 lead with under four minutes left. Newman answered with a Redondo three and a Lioukina bucket to pull within two. The Jets kept pushing, but a late 4-0 UAM run stretched their lead to 59-52. Martin scored with 1:10 remaining, but Newman couldn't close the gap, and UAM held on for the 61–54 win.

- McMillin led the Jets with 17 points,
- Martin added 12 points, going 4-7 from the field while snagging five boards.
- Redondo went 3-3 from behind the arc, scoring nine points.
