Jets defeat UAFS, 3-1

FORT SMITH, Ark.- Newman capped off their weekend road trip facing Arkansas-Fort Smith. Against the Lions, the Jets battled their way to a 3-1 victory.

How It Happened:

-The Jets and Lions would stay within just a few points of each other through the beginning of set one. The Jets would find their largest lead at the 12-8 mark with a kill by Isabella Lamb, followed by a Lions error. The Lions put together a 3-0 run to make it a one point game at 12-11. The Jets would continue to push, putting together a 3-0 run of their own with a kill by Avery Kelley, followed by a service ace by Josie Weers and an error by the Lions. This small push by the Jets forced UAFS to take their first timeout of set one. After the timeout, the Lions closed the gap to just two points at 18-16. This made the Jets take a timeout. After the Jets timeout, the Lions tied the game at 18 all. Later, the Lions would take the lead at 20-19. The Lions would hold this lead, and win the set 25-22.

-The Jets would rally in the second set. It was a back and forth battle throughout the set, allowing each other to just out a few point runs together. The Jets and Lions found themselves tied at 19 all. A 3-0 run by the Jets, with help from kills by Hannah Tymitz and Sky Miller pushed Newman to a 21-19 lead. UAFS would take back the lead at 23-22 but the Jets kept battling. Newman regained the lead at 25-24. The Lions would battle back and tie it at 25 all. A kill by Isabella Lamb and an error by the Lions would allow the Jets to take the set two win, 27-25.

-Newman continued their momentum into the third set taking a 9-5 early lead. The Jets would hold the lead until the 12-12 mark. UAFS would take the 13-12 lead, but the Jets kept battling. A 5-0 run by the Jets, led by Miller, would push Newman to a 17-13 lead. Later, errors by the Lions would allow the Jets to push their lead to 22-15. The Lions tried to battle back, but would run out of time. Newman took the third set, 25-22.

-The Jets hopped out to a large lead in the fourth set, gaining the lead at 14-8. This deficit would prove to be too large for the Lions to overcome. The Jets led as big as 18-9. The Lions tried to put a run together, getting back within two points at 19-17. However, two kills by Tymitz would push the Jets to a 21-17 lead. Newman would close out the set, taking the win 25-18.
