WICHITA- Women's Basketball opened conference play against Northeastern State for the MIAA Basketball Game of the Week. The Jets fell to NSU, 74-49.
How it Happened:
- The Riverhawks went on a 4-0 run to start the game. A free throw by
Valeriya Lioukina put the Jets on the board. Another basket by the Riverhawks pushed their lead out to five. A jumper from
Jaeden McMillin cut the deficit to just three points. At the end of the quarter the Riverhawks found a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 19-3.
Dani Williams would score on the Jets last possession of the quarter to make it a 19-5 lead in favor of the Riverhawks.
- McMillin scored the first basket of the second quarter to make it 19-7. The Riverhawks found another offensive surge, going on a 6-0 run to make it a 25-7 game with 7:30 to play in the second quarter. Lioukina scored her third point of the game to stop the run. A three-pointer by
Monica Redondo cut the score to 27-12 with 5:30 to play. The Riverhawks were able to respond with a 5-0 run to extend their lead. A three-pointer by
Paige Craft cut the NSU run short. NSU would continue to find small offensive surges to remain the lead throughout the remainder of the second quarter. At the halftime break, the Jets were trailing 41-16.
- Out of the half, NSU found a 4-0 run. McMillin answered with a 4-0 run to keep the deficit at 25 with seven to play in the quarter. Another short offensive spurt pushed NSU to a thirty point lead with 4:30 to play.
Carli Carlson hit her first points of the night, connecting from behind the arc.
Delainey Wylie would hit her first points with a jumper with under three minutes to play. Later,
Alexis Martin hit her third point of the night to make it 56-28 with just over two minutes. With 26 seconds remaining in the quarter,
Jolene Ramiro connected with her first points of the contest. The Riverhawks would connect with their own three-pointer before the quarter ended, making their lead 64-33.
- Craft scored the first points of the fourth quarter with two free throws. A 6-0 run by the Riverhawks was stopped by a basket from Redondo to make it 68-37 with under seven minutes to play. This basket by Redondo sparked a 7-0 run with a basket by Carlson and free throws by Lioukina. This cut the Jets deficit to 68-42 with just over four minutes to play.
Charlize Williams scored her first points at the free throw line with 3:30 to play. Though the Jets outscored the Riverhawks in the final quarter, the deficit was too large for Newman to overcome. Newman fell to Northeastern State, 74-49.
