WICHITA- The Jets hosted Arkansas-Fort Smith to cap off opening weekend of MIAA play. Newman defeated the Lions for their first conference win, 77-60.
How it Happened:
- The Jets and Lions traded off and on baskets for the first four minutes of the game. The Jets would find an offensive surge with a 10-0 run taking Newman to a 19-8 lead with just over three minutes to play in the opening quarter. In this surge,
Paige Craft scored two,
Jaeden McMillin added two,
Carli Carlson added three, with
Monica Redondo capping the run off with a three-pointer. The Lions were able to find a 5-0 run to cut the Jets lead to 19-13 with a minute remaining in the quarter. Two free throws by
Valeriya Lioukina would push Newman to a 21-13 lead at the end of one.
- McMillin scored her eighth point of the contest to open the second quarter. With a three-pointer by
Jolene Ramiro, four points from McMillin, and a jumper from Craft, the Jets found themselves with their largest lead at 32-15 with 5:30 to play in the half. Later, an and-one by Lioukina pushed the lead to 35-17. The Lions would find a 13-0 run to finish off the first half. This surge by the Lions cut the Jets lead to just five at the break, 35-30. In the half, McMillin led the Jets with 12 points with Lioukina adding seven points.
- To start the second half, Ramiro hit five straight points for the Jets to hold an eight point lead. Craft would score her sixth point to push the Jets to a ten point lead, 42-32. An 8-0 run with free throws by Craft and three-pointers by McMillin and
Delainey Wylie pushed Newman to a 52-36 lead with just under six to play in the quarter. The Jets were able to hold the Lions off for the remainder of third quarter. At the final quarter break, the Jets led 58-47.
- To open the fourth quarter, the Jets hit a 6-2 run with three-pointers by Ramiro and Redondo to give Newman a 15 point lead. A short offensive surge with points by McMillin and Craft took the Jets to a 68-52 lead with under three to play. A 6-0 run would close out the game for Newman. Ramiro, McMillin and Craft all added to this last offensive push for the Jets. Newman would close out the win, 77-60.

- McMillin led the Jets with 21 points, and added ten rebounds.
-Ramiro scored 16 points, going 4-5 from three and dished out four assists.
- Craft scored 14 points with six assists and finished 6-10 from the field.
