BETHANY, Okla. -Baseball played their first doubleheader of the season, facing first Southern Nazarene and then New Mexico Highlands. In the morning game, the Jets lost a close 3-4 game to SNU. Against NMHU, Newman fell 12-7.
How It Happened:
At SNU:
- Southern Nazarene started the game playing good defense, recording three quick outs. After that, they had the first hit of the game with a single to left field.
Colby Wilson held them to only that hit, recording two strikeouts to close out the inning.
Blake Mitchell had the first hit for the Jets with a single to third base, which was followed by a hit by pitch to
Jack Kiser.
Nicolas Ely batted both of the runners in with a long double to right field, giving Newman an early lead. The Storm responded in the bottom of the second with a three run homer to right field that gave them the lead. Back at the top of the lineup,
Eli Wohl reached first base on an error by the shortstop.
Micah Kobuszewski's single to right field was enough for Wohl to score from first base and tie the game 3-3. Wilson added two more strikeouts to his tally in the bottom of the third to bring the Jets offense back out.
- Ely recorded a double in the top of the fourth but a good defensive effort by SNU prevented the Jets from scoring.
Cole Landgraf entered the game in the bottom of the fourth and was able to stop the Storm from scoring with a double play that left three runners on base. Pierson Gunnel and Kobuszewski both had a hit in the fifth but they didn't end on a run scored.
Andrew Hudson got on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and was later replaced by
Lance Elsen. With the bases loaded, the Crimson Storm were only able to score one run. After 5, the score was 3-4 in favor of SNU.
Trent Trammell was the only Jet that was able to record a hit in the sixth inning with a single to center field. In the bottom of the sixth, Elsen added another strikeout to help the Jets secure a scoreless inning. SNU displayed a good defensive team effort in the top of the seventh to end the game 3-4.
vs NMHU:
- The Jets held the Cowboys to just one hit in the opening inning with
Aleks Koppel on the mound.
Trent Trammell doubled to right field with two outs in the second inning, but the Jets were unable to score. In the top of the second inning, the Jets escaped the inning allowing zero runs and just two hits to keep the score at 0-0. In the bottom of the second inning,
Eli Wohl singled to center field, pushing the first run across the plate to make it 1-0 in favor of the Jets. The following at bat,
Micah Kobuszewski singled to center field, scoring the Jets second run. The Jets would end the inning up 2-0. Koppel held the Cowboys to no hits and no runs in the top of the third inning to keep the Jets up 2-0. In the bottom of the third inning, Trammell homered to left field to take the 3-0 lead.
Blake Mitchell followed up Trammell's home run with a home run of his own to make it 4-0. The Cowboys escaped the inning by allowing just those two runs.
- Neither team scored in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth inning, the Cowboys scored their first runs of the game after a single to left field scored two. The Jets answered in the bottom of the inning after a double by
Hunter Brown that scored two to make it 6-2. Brown later scored on a passed ball to make it 7-2 in favor of the Jets heading into the sixth inning. The Cowboys had a big sixth inning, after closing the gap to just one run at 7-6 still in favor of the Jets. The Cowboys held the Jets scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh inning, the Cowboys took the lead from the Jets with a score off of a wild pitch and a two run home run to center field. These runs put the Cowboys up 10-7. A few batters later, the Cowboys hit another home run to add two more runs. The Jets ended the inning down 12-7. These runs were enough to take the win. The Jets fell 12-7.
