Softball opens season at Branson Leadoff Classic

BRANSON, Mo.- The Jets traveled to Branson to compete in the Branson Leadoff Classic to kick off the 2025 campaign. The Jets were unable to take a win in the opening weekend, finishing 0-4 through the two days of play. 

vs. Maryville: NU 2, MU 8
 - Maryville was first to hit the scoreboard after a single scored two runs in the first inning for the Saints. The Jets were able to escape the inning with a double play and a ground out to Gianna Navarro put the top of the inning away. The Jets were able to cut the Saints lead in half after Rylee Gresham scored AJ Borja from third base to make it 2-1 in favor of the Saints. The Saints were able to get out of the inning just allowing the one run. The Saints were able to score three runs in the top of the second inning to push their lead to 5-1. The Jets were unable to answer back in the bottom half of the inning. Maryville was next to put runs on the board. In the top of the fourth inning, a double pushed a Saints run across the plate. Maryville then added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead with just two innings left for the Jets to put some runs on the board. The Jets were able to cut the deficit in the seventh inning. Borja doubled to center field to kick off the inning. Borja then advanced the third after Navarro hit a single. Boja then was able to score on the same play off of an error by the short stop. This run cut the Saints lead to 8-2 with two outs. However, the Saints were able to end the inning and take the win, 8-2. 
Player Notes:
- Borja scored both Jets runs after reaching base twice off of a double and a walk. 
- Navarro and Canez brought in two hits a piece, both going 2-3 at the plate. 
- Rylee Gresham led the team with one RBI.

vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State: NU 5, SNU 6
The Jets nearly completed the comeback in the fourth inning, but fell just short at 6-5. The Jets were first on the board after Alex Schreiener scored to put the first run across the plate. The Rangers were quick to respond with a homer run which tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. The Rangers put up a big fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits to take the 6-1 lead. The Jets remained at just one on the board, until the top of the 6th inning. The Jets started off with two singles by Schreiner and Lauren McNaught. Lani Dryden doubled to left field, pushing a run in and moving McNaught to third. Malie Noda then added a single in the inning that scored Dryden and McNaught to make it a 6-4 game with one out. After an error by the right fielder of the Rangers, which allowed Noda to score to cut the deficit to just one at 6-5. The Rangers were able to escape the inning allowing four runs. The Jets were unable to tie the score in the remainder of the innings. Northwestern Oklahoma State took the contest, 6-5. 
Player Notes:
- Noda led the Jets with two runs batted in.
- McNaught and Schreiner both collected two hits on the day. 

vs. Southern Nazarene: NU 0, SNU 10
The Crimson Storm defeated the Jets, with a 10-0 win. A sacrifice bunt by SNU in the first inning put the Storm on the board first. SNU then added another run in the second inning after drawing a walk. The Storm then added five runs on five hits in the top of the third inning. The Jets had no answer for the strong offensive showing by the storm. Woodard started in the circle for the Storm, allowing just one hit, zero runs, and seven strikeouts and no walks. 
Player Notes:
-Paola Zamacona started in the circle for the Jets and pitched three innings. Lydia Weldon and Kinyon DeCorte both pitched an inning for the Jets. 
-Gianna Navarro was the sole Jet to record a hit, with her hit being a double. 

vs. Arkansas Monticello: NU 2, UAM 4
-The Blossoms were first to the scoreboard after a single pushed a run across the board in the second inning. The Blossoms were the next to score in the fourth inning on a wild pitch. A double to right field that brought in their third run. In the fifth inning, Gianna Navarro singled to left field that brought the first Jets run across the plate. Madi Canez was next up to the plate, where she singled to center field that scored the Jets second run. This run cut the deficit to 3-2 with two innings left to play. The Blossoms were able to tack on another run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead out to 4-2. The Jets were unable to put runs on the board in the final innings. The Blossoms took the game, 4-2. 
Player Notes:
- Katelyn Westover started in the circle for the Jets, allowing eight hits, three earned runs over five innings pitched. 
- Canez and Navarro each drove in a run for the Jets. 
- Canez led with two hits.

The Jets are back in action next weekend at the Alvin Early Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas.
