WICHITA- Women's Basketball hosted Rogers State, facing them for the second time this season. Last time out against the Hillcats, the Jets fell 51-39. This time against the Hillcats, the Jets took the win 67-41.
How it Happened:
- Rogers State hopped out to an 8-0 run to start the first quarter.
Paige Craft scored the first basket for the Jets with a jumper to stop the Hillcats lead.
Monica Redondo then hit from behind the arc to cut the score to 8-5 with under six left to play in the quarter. A free throw by
Jaeden McMillin cut the deficit to just two at the halfway point. Rogers State then went on a small run to take a 12-6 lead. A basket by
Valeriya Lioukina stopped the run and put the Jets within four points. Another basket by Rogers State took the lead to 13-8 with three minutes remaining in the quarter. More free throws from McMillin put the Jets within three points. To end the quarter, Craft hit from behind the arc to tie it at 13 all heading into the second quarter.
- Out of the break, the Jets struck first with a basket by Lioukina. This basket gave the Jets their first lead of the game. The Hillcats then tied it at 15 all on the next possession. A few possessions later, the Hillcats took the lead at 17-15. Free throws by McMillin then tied it back at 17 all. Rogers State continued to battle, retaking the lead after hitting from behind the arc. A three pointer by Craft tied the game again, but the Hillcats took it back a minute later. Craft then tied the game up again with a layup to make it 22-22 with 4:30 left in the half. The Jets and Hillcats continued with the back and forth until more free throws by McMillin gave the Jets the 27-24 lead. The Jets were able to add more to the lead with an and one from Redondo to put the deficit at six. The Hillcats were able to cut the Jets lead to four with just under a minute and a half left. However, Redondo hit the last basket of the half to head into the break with the lead 32-26.
- To start the second half, Rogers State scored first to cut the deficit to four. Back-to-back scores by McMillin and Lioukina put the Jets with an eight point lead.
Saige Grampsas then hit a three to take the lead to double-digits. From there, the Jets went on a tear offensively. Grampsas hit another three to take the Jets up 16 points. On the next possession, Craft hit a three to take the Jets to 47-28 with 2:26 left to play in the third quarter. More points from Craft put the Jets up 21 points, their biggest lead of the game. The Jets held the Hillcats to just two points in the third quarter, outscoring the Hillcats 17-2.
- In the fourth quarter, the Hillcats tried to cut into the large deficit, but the Jets were still hot. McMillin hit a three around the eight minute mark to put Newman up 22 points, 52-30. Then McMillin scored a minute later to take the lead to 24.
Layla Pierce hit a three at the 6:30 mark to take the lead to 26 points. The Hillcats were able to cut the deficit to 20 points at the halfway mark but Pierce answered with a three pointer to take the Jets back up to a 23 point lead. Another Jets three-pointer by
Katie Weiss gave the Jets a 27 point lead. Then,
Charlize Williams hit a three with under two minutes to play to make it 67-39..The Jets would close out the win and take the contest 67-41. The Jets team shot 52% from behind the arc, going 12-23 from three.
