Last Time Out
After getting a win in the Hall of Fame game against Rogers State, Newman traveled to Joplin to face Missouri Southern on Thursday. Newman dominated most of the first half and went to the break with a six point lead over the Lions. In the second half, a very accurate MSSU offense turned the game around and outscored the Jets by twenty two, to take the game 85-69.
Deadric Fikes had a career-high 27 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds. On Saturday, the Jets played PSU in Pittsburg, Kan. in what was a very close game until the very end. Newman only tailed by two at half time, but was once again outscored in the second half.
Jordan Glenn-Hawkins led the Jets with 18 points which made him reach the 1,000 career points milestone.
Boston Stanton III had 15 points, grabbed five rebounds and gave five assists, while Fikes recorded back-to-back double digit points with twelve.
Scouting the Jets
The Jets are averaging 77.4 points per game, while holding their opponents to 76.6 points per game. As a team, Newman is shooting 45.8% from the field and 35.6% from behind the arc. The scoring for the Jets is well spread, with four Jets averaging double digit points per game (Stanton III,
Sam Somerhalder,
Aaron Murphy, and Glenn-Hawkins). Stanton III and Murphy are tied at 11.1 points per game for a total of 256 points. Somerhalder leads the Jets in rebounding with 6.1 per game.
Behind Enemy Lines
Nebraska Kearney is off to a 8-13 season with a 6-7 conference record. Ja'Bryant Hill leads the Lopers offense, averaging over 15 points per game. Two other Lopers are also averaging just around fifteen points per game. UNK is averaging 72.9 points per game as a team, shooting 42.7% from the field and 31.9% from behind the arc. The Lopers, who come from beating Northeastern State in overtime last Saturday, will travel to Emporia State following Wednesday night's matchup.
Fort Hays State is off to a 15-7 season with a 8-5 conference mark. Leading the way for the Tigers is Kaleb Hammeke, averaging 14.7 points per game while shooting 35.6% from behind the arc. As a team, the Tigers are averaging 66.5 points per game, shooting 45% from the field and 36% from behind the arc. Shaun Riley is leading FHSU in rebounds with 6.7 per game. Two other Tigers are averaging above ten points per game. Fort Hays St. will face Emporia State on Thursday before facing the Jets on Saturday.
