WICHITA- The Jets hosted Nebraska Kearney for their first matchup of the season. The Lopers took the matchup, 69-42.
How it Happened:
-The Lopers started the game off with a 12-2 run. A basket by
Paige Craft cut the Lopers run, but UNK was able to answer with another basket.
Jaeden McMillin then hit back-to-back shots to cut the Lopers lead to just 14-8 with over two minutes to play in the first quarter. The Lopers answered with a run of their own, but a
Layla Pierce three cut the deficit to just ten to end the first quarter of play. The Lopers had the 20-10 lead at the first break.
-To start the second quarter of play,
Brooklyn Love hit from behind the arc to cut it to a seven point game. The Lopers then went on an 8-0 run that took their lead to 28-13.
Saige Grampsas cut the run with her first basket of the game. The Lopers then added another run, 6-0, to take the score to 34-15.
Valeriya Lioukina then scored her first basket of the game to try to stop the Lopers momentum. Liokina's basket was followed up by a jumper by Love to cut the score to 34-19 with under three minutes to play in the half. The Lopers scored two more baskets to end the half with the 38-19 lead.
-The Jets were first to score in the second half with a basket from Grampsas. The Jets defense held the Lopers scoreless for their first few possessions, until the Lopers added two more points under the eight minute mark. McMillin scored her eighth point of the night a minute later. McMillin then scored the next Jets basket at the 4:30 mark, making it a 42-25 game. A basket by
Charlize Williams brought the Jets to a 21 point deficit. Love closed out the quarter with her seventh point on the night to make it 52-30.
-The Lopers went on a 7-0 run to start the final quarter. With under five minutes to play, McMillin hit her 14th point of the game and Lioukina added two baskets in a row to make the score 63-40. Though the Jets continued to push in the final quarter, they could not cut the deficit. UNK would take the game, 69-42.
