Softball splits on final day of Washburn Tournament

Jets defeat Beavers, fall to Miners

TOPEKA, Kan.- Softball faced Minot State and Missouri S&T to close out Washburn Tournament play. The Jets first faced Minot State where they defeated the Beavers 7-6. Then against the Miners, the Jets fell 14-6. 

vs Minot State: NU 7, MSU 6
- The Beavers were first to the board with a home run in the top of the second inning. The Jets were quick to answer in the bottom half of the inning Reghann Fairbairn started off the inning with a walk. Then Hayley Bonython doubled to right field that pushed Fairbairn to third base. Malie Noda then singled up the middle to push Bonython to third and scored Fairbairn to tie the game at 1-1. Another Jets run scored after a wild pitch by the Beavers to make it 2-1 in favor of the Jets. Later in the inning, AJ Borja singled up the middle that scored two runs to push the Jets lead to 4-1. 
- The Jets offense got their bats rolling in the bottom of the fourth inning. A single by Aspen Peterson kicked off the inning. Peterson would later score off of a passed ball to make it 5-1. Then a bunt by Lani Dryden scored Borja who walked earlier in the inning. This allowed the Jets to take the 6-1 lead. A single by Bonython scored Dryden to make it a 7-1 game in favor of the Jets. The Jets defense held strong, keeping the Beavers to just one run on one hit until the top of the sixth inning. Two walks started the inning, allowing two Beavers to reach base. Then a single up the middle scored two runs to cut the Jets lead to 7-3. A wild pitch by the Jets allowed another run to score. This was followed by a sacrifice fly to push their fifth run across the plate. The Jets were able to escape the inning with the lead at 7-5. The Jets were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Beavers were able to tack one more run on in the top of the seventh inning, but the Jets defense and pitching by Kinyon DeCourte closed out the seventh inning. The Jets took the win at 7-6. 

Player Notes:
- Borja led the Jets with two  RBIs, scoring one and tallying one hit. 
- Bonython tallied two hits on four at bats with one RBI and scored one run. 
- Noda and Dryden both recorded one RBI. 
- Romo earned her first win in her first appearance of the season.
- DeCourte recorded the save. 

Vs. Missouri S&T: NU 6, MST 14
- The Jets got off to a hot start with a double from Borja to start the game. Dryden followed this with a single to left field. A single by Gianna Navarro scored Borja for the early 1-0 lead. Later, an RBI by Noda pushed Dryden across the plate for the Jets second run of the inning. Peterson then singled to third base that scored Fairbairn who had reached base by a fielder's choice. Kayla Lopez later singled to right field that scored Bonython who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. This hot start gave the Jets the 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. The Miners were quick to respond, with three hits in the bottom half of the inning that scored three runs. This made the Jets lead 4-3 heading into the second inning. In the bottom half of the second inning, the Miners were able to take the lead from the Jets after a two run home run. This made the score 5-4 in favor of the Miners. The Jets cooled off on the offensive end, not being able to score in the third inning. Then, in the bottom of the third inning another home run by the Miners gave them the 6-4 lead. Later in the inning the Miners connected with their third home run of the game to make it 7-4. The Miners would go on to add two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 9-4 lead. The Miners came out of the third inning with five hits scoring four runs and one error by the Jets defense. 
- The Jets offense got rolling again in the top of the fourth inning. Lopez kicked off the inning with a single. Next, an error by the defense allowed Borja to reach first base and Lopez advanced to third base. An RBI by Navarro scored Lopez to make it 9-5. Then, a single by Fairbairn cut the deficit to just three at 9-6 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Jets defense was able to hold the Miners scoreless in the bottom of the inning, allowing just one hit in the inning. 
-The Miners defense was then able to hold the Jets scoreless in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Miners bats were hot. The Miners scored one run off of a Jets wild pitch to make it a 10-6 game. Then, a grand slam by the Miners scored four to make it 14-6 which ended the game in five innings. 

Player Notes:
- Navarro tallied two RBIs with one hit on two at bats
- Borja went 2-4 from the plate and scored twice.
- Lopez went 2-3 from the plate scoring once with an RBI. 
- Noda and Fairbairn both added an RBI apiece. 

The Jets are back in action next weekend at the Drury Classic in Springfield, Missouri.
