Jets beat Crimson Storm in extra innings midweek matchup

Gunnell hits third homerun of the season

WICHITA - Baseball hosted the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm in a midweek non-conference game. After splitting the first two games of the season, the Jets took the season series with a 15-14 tenth inning win. 

How It Happened:
The game started with SNU earning a walk. Then, after two hits and a hit by the pitcher, the Crimson Storm scored the first two runs of the game. Fran Montanez, who started on the mound for the Jets, got two strikeouts to end the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Anthony Cannavino and Hunter Brown got on base walking in the first two at bats in the game for Newman. After that, both Micah Kobuszewski and Blake Mitchell hit singles to score the runners and tie the game at twos. Following that, Micah stole third and then scored off of a double by Louis Coca that also scored Mitchell to give Newman a 4-2 lead. Pierson Gunnell joined the batting party and hit a double to right field. Then, Zac Becker got hit by the pitch to load the bases for the Jets. A single by Scott Allan scored the fifth run for the Jets. In the top of the second, five walks, four hits by the pitcher and three doubles led to 9 SNU runs that gave them a 11-5 lead. Kaden Wright and Nick Ely got on the mound for the Jets to try to stop the Crimson Storm, but they were unsuccessful. Then, in the bottom of the second, Kobuszewski got on base with a hit by the pitcher and then advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Mitchell's single scored him for Newman's sixth run. A wild pitch and a double by Coca placed Mitchell at third. After that, a sacrifice fly out by Zac Becker scored Blake. Jared Newton came in to pitch for Newman in the top of the third. He only allowed one hit and struck out a batter to end the half inning. Only Hunter Brown was able to get a hit in the bottom of the third but it didn't lead to anything. 

Newton struck out two more batters and only allowed one hit in the top of the fourth, maintaining the Jets in the game. Newman got the first three batters on base with a single by Coca, a walk by Gunnell, and another single by Becker. With no outs recorded, Sutton Tistworth reached first on an error by the shortstop that helped Coca score Newman's eighth run. Then, Brown batted in Gunnell and Becker with a double to left field that put Newman only one run behind SNU. After that, a wild pitched scored Tistworth to tie the game. The top of the fifth went hitless and scoreless. Mitchell opened the bottom of the fifth with a hit but was recorded out reaching to second. Coca and Gunnell earned walks. Then, Becker's single scored Coca to give Newman a 12-11 lead. Maximus Moreno pitched in the sixth inning for the Jets and didn't allow any hits or runs. In the bottom of the sixth, the first three Jet batters were retired. In the top of the seventh, Caden Poor came in for Moreno and struck out a batter, but SNU tied the game again with a home run to right field. In the bottom of the inning, Coca earned a walk and was later scored by Gunnell's home run to center field. Newman led 14-12. Before the end of the inning, Becker hit a double to center field. 

Lance Elsen entered the field for Poor in the top of the eighth. A walk and a single forced another pitching change for the Jets. Kellen Curtis held the Crimson Storm to only score the runners they already had on base, and struck out the last batter to end the top half of the inning. The Jets weren't able to get on base in the bottom of the eighth. With a 14-14 score, neither team was able to score in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. Colby Wilson pitched for the Jets in the ninth inning, and Andrew Hudson replaced him for the tenth. Hudson held SNU scoreless and hitless in the top half of the inning, giving Newman the chance to win the game in the bottom half of the tenth. Gunnell's second double of the day put him within scoring distance. Then, a sacrifice bunt by Nick Chasey moved him up to third base. Finally, Scott Allan's sacrifice fly to right field scored Gunnell to give Newman a 15-14 win.  

Player Notes: 
-Gunnell went 3-4 with two doubles, a home run and two runs batted in. 
-Coca hit 3-4 with two doubles, scoring 4 runs and batting in two more.
-Becker went 3-3 with 2 RBIs.
-Mitchell got three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
-Hudson got the win on the mound.
