WICHITA- The Newman Softball Field hosted a conference doubleheader between the Jets and the RiverHawks on Friday afternoon. The first game ended 9-8 in favor of NSU. Game 2 ended with a 2-4 score for the Jets' first conference win of the season.
Game 1: NU 8, NSU 9
The RiverHawks were first to score in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs off of three singles.
Maddie Rae Romo started on the mound for the Jets and struck out the first batter she faced.
Madi Canez and
Hannah Nordby got on base, walking, but didn't score. In the second, NSU added two more runs with three hits, forcing
Zoe Fulks to enter the game. Fulks struck out a batter to record the last out of the half inning.
Lauren McNaught got a hit in the bottom half, but the Jets couldn't score her. The Jets held off the RiverHawks to only one hit, and no runs in the top of the third. Nordby hit a lead off single in the bottom of the third, but was later retired on a fielder's choice. Then,
Malie Noda hit a triple to right field to score Newman's first run of the day in
Gianna Navarro. After three the score was 4-1.Â
The Jets displayed good defense in the top of the fourth and retired the three batters they faced. Then, a single by Nordby scored McNaught, who got on base with a walk, for the Jets' second run. Fulk's second strike out ended the top of the fifth and brought the Jets bats out.
Lani Dryden entered the game and hit a triple in  her first at bat. Then, a ground out by
Reghann Fairbairn scored her to put the Jets within a run of the RiverHawks. Three singles and a double scored four NSU runs to leave the score at 8-3. But the Jets answered, scoring four runs off singles by McNaught, Nordby, and Dryden, and a triple by
Malie Noda. In the seventh and last inning both teams scored a run off of two hits, leaving a final 9-8 score for NSU.Â

Game 2: NU 4, NSU 2
Katelyn Westover held the RiverHawks off to one hit and got herself a strike out in the top of the first inning. But the Jets couldn't get on base in the bottom half. In the second inning, NSU scored the first run of the game off of two hits, and the Jets weren't able to answer. In the third inning, only
Reghann Fairbairn was able to get a hit, but neither team was able to score. Two RiverHawk singles scored their second run of the game. But this time the Jets answered. Dryden and Navarro earned walks, and Borja, Noda, and Nordby hit singles to score Newman's first run of the game. Westover and the Jets defense recorded three quick fly outs to bring their bats back out and continue their rally. Four straight hits by
Rylee Gresham, Dryden, Borja, and Noda scored three runs for the Jets, who led 2-4 after 5 innings played. The Jets retired the three batters they faced in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half, Fairbairn earned a walk but no Jet was able to score
Travia Smith, who got in to pinch run for her. Two consecutive NSU hits forced a pitching change for the Jets with two outs recorded. Zamacona entered the game and helped the defense record a fly out to end the game 2-4 and mark Newman's first MIAA win of the season.Â
