Game Recap: Softball |

Softball comes just short of split with Griffons

St. Joseph, Mo. -The Jets traveled to the Spring Sports Complex to face the Missouri Western Griffons in a conference doubleheader. After splitting with NWOSU in their midweek matchup, the Jets lost Game 1 to MWSU, 1-9. Then, Newman dropped the second game 5-6 in the eighth inning.

Game 1: NU 1, MWSU 9
Newman couldn't get on base in the top frame of the first inning. Then, with Katelyn Westover starting on the mound for the Jets, two free bases, an error, and a double scored the Griffons' first run of the game. NU answered right back and tied the game with a double by Reghann Fairbairn that was later scored by Hannah Nordby's single to left field. A great defensive double play by the Jets ended the second inning. Only Lani Dryden was able to get on base in the top of the third for Newman with a single to shortstop. MWSU scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning aided by a home run, two doubles, a single, and multiple free bases. Halfway through the half inning, Lydia Weldon replaced Westover pitching. The Griffons added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth from another homer, a double, and two singles. After four innings, the score was 1-9 in favor of Missouri Western. The Jets were unable to reduce the difference in the top half of the fifth, leading to a final 1-9 score in favor of MWSU.

Player Notes:
-Fairbairn hit a double and scored a run.
-Nordby got an RBI and a hit.
-Dryden added a hit.

Game 2: NU 5, MWSU 6
A single by Nordby and a walk by AJ Borja put two runners on base early for the Jets. Then, three consecutive singles by Fairbairn, Gianna Navarro, and Malie Noda scored both initial runners. Paola Zamacona and the Jets defense held the Griffons hitless and scoreless in the bottom of the first. The second frame went scoreless for both teams. In the third inning, only Navarro was able to get a hit. Hayley Bonython was hit by the pitch to start the top of the fourth. Then, a single by Lauren McNaught, a walk by Canez, and a single by Dryden scored both Bonython and McNaught. After three and a half, the Jets led 5-0. The Griffons could only answer with a hit, but it didn't end on a run. In the fifth, McNaught added another hit, and the Griffons scored their first run of the game off a double that scored a runner that got on base walking. Neither team was able to score or get a get in the sixth inning. In the seventh frame, the Jets couldn't increase their lead. The Griffons capitalized on the opportunity and scored four runs off two hits, an error, and multiple free bases to tie the game at fives and send it to extra innings. Zoe Fulks substituted Zamacona halfway through the bottom of the seventh but then Zamacona came back in the game in the eighth. The Jets couldn't get on the board in the top half of the eighth. Two walks and a sacrifice fly scored the winning run for MWSU and ended the game 5-6.
