Joplin, Mo. -Baseball traveled to Missouri Southern for a midweek conference game against the number twelve ranked team in the country. Two big scoring innings from the ranked Lions were too much for the Jets to overcome, leading to a final 0-11 score.
How It Happened:
Nick Chasey and
Micah Kobuszewski both got on base after an earned walk and a single to center field, but a double play by the Lions defense retired the side.
Cole Landgraf started pitching for the Jets and recorded three consecutive outs after the first two batters got on base. Newman was held hitless in the top of the second. After that, and despite getting two batters out early, the Lions scored five runs off of three hits and a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Hunter Brown was able to get a hit early in the top of the third, but a good defensive effort by MSSU denied Newman from scoring. Then,
Andrew Hudson replaced Landgraf on the mound in the bottom of the third and with the help of the Jets defense, retired three of the four batters he faced.
The Jets were not able to get on base in the top of the fourth. Following that,
Kellen Curtis entered the game for Hudson. Curtis only allowed one hit in the inning, and a great double play by the Jets denied the Lions from scoring any of the three runners they had. In the top of the fifth, two fly outs and a strikeout retired the Jets offense.
Chan Yoon came in to replace Curtis in the bottom of the fifth. Then, the Lions increased their lead scoring four runs off of three hits, an error, a hit by the pitch, and a walk.
Brycen Schoenhofer entered the game and helped the Jets defense record a double play to retire the Lions bats. In the top of the sixth, Chasey reached first on an error and then stole second base, but MSSU recorded the third out before he could score the first run for the Jets. After a weather delay,
Lance Elsen entered the game to pitch for the Jets. The Lions scored two runs off of an error and a hit, leaving the score at 0-11. Newman got two batters on base in a late attempt of trying to stop the Lions from ending the game early, but three consecutive strikeouts from MSSU's pitcher ended the game in the top of the seventh.
