WICHITA- Newman hosted the Pittsburg State Gorillas for their second conference doubleheader of the season. In the first game, PSU decided the game in the third inning scoring eight runs. The game ended in the fifth inning with a 11-1 final score. Game two went to extra innings with PSU taking the game 7-6 in the tenth.
How it Happened:
Game 1:
Lydia Weldon started on the mound for the Jets. That's the second time the freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma starts for Newman in as many days. The Gorillas were able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first after getting two hits. One of those hits was a two-run home run that gave them an early lead. Newman was unable to respond with any hits or runners on base in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second, Weldon held the Gorillas off to no hits or runs. Then, the Jets couldn't get on base in the bottom of the second after two good efforts by PSU's defense. A three-run homer by the Gorillas forced Newman to change their pitcher.
Zoe Fulks entered the game for the Jets with the hope of stopping PSU's bats. Three errors and three hits led to three more Gorilla runs, ending the top of the third with an 8-0 score. Following that, the Jets couldn't get on base in the bottom of the third. Fulks helped the Jets retire the three batters they faced in the top of the fourth. Then, a strikeout and two consecutive Jet ground outs ended the inning. In the top of the fifth, the Gorillas scored their 11th run off of a hit by the pitcher, a stolen base and a single to center field that scored the runner. In a late attempt to stop the game from ending early,
Malie Noda hit a double to center field. Then, two consecutive fly outs helped her score the first Jet run of the day. After that, a third consecutive fly out ended the game with a final 11-1 score.
Game 2:
Maddie Rae Romo started game two on the mound for Newman. An error by the Jets got a PSU batter on base, who later scored off of a ground out. A single hit scored the Gorillas second run, who got on base with an earned walk. The top of the first ended with Romo striking out the batter looking.
Madi Canez and
AJ Borja earned a walk in the first two at bats of the game for the Jets. A hit by the pitcher to
Reghann Fairbairn loaded the bases for Newman. Two single hits by
Hannah Nordby and
Alex Schreiner scored all three runners to give Newman a 2-3 lead at the end of the first. In the top of the second, the Gorillas scored four runs off of two doubles, a single and a fielder's choice. With only one out recorded,
Paola Zamacona entered the game for the Jets to replace Romo on the mound. A fly out ended the top half of the inning.
Kayla Lopez walked to start the bottom of the second, but a double play and foul out retired the side. Zamacona only allowed one hit in the top of the third and, with the help of her defense, recorded three out to bring the offense back out. Fairbairn and Noda got hits in the bottom of the third, but it wasn't enough to score a run. Zamacona only allowed PSU a walk before retiring the side.
Kayla Lopez got on base off of an error in the first at bat for Newman of the fourth inning.
AJ Borja's double to center field advanced Lopez to third. An error by PSU's first base got
Gianna Navarro on first, advanced Borja to third and scored Lopez for Newman's fourth run. Then, a single by Fairbairn scored Borja to put the Jets only within a run from the Gorillas. Then, a new PSU pitcher struck out two Jet batters to end the inning.
Both teams got a hit in the fifth inning, with Newman's coming from
Lauren McNaught, but neither team was able to score. After that, Newman recorded three quick outs in the top of the sixth. Then, Borja got on base after being hit by the pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A hit by Fairbairn scored Borja's tying run. After six, the game was 6-6. The seventh inning went hitless and scoreless, sending the game to extra innings. In the eighth, only Borja was able to get a single hit, but no one was able to score. Then in the ninth, both teams retired the three batters they faced. Finally, in the tenth, two hits and an error helped the Gorillas score the go ahead run.
