Softball splits with Fort Hays State

Jets take game one, drop game two

 WICHITA- The Jets hosted Fort Hays State for a Friday doubleheader. In game one, the Jets took the seven inning battle, 2-1. In game two, the Jets fell short at 5-3. 
 
Game One:
The Jets and Tigers were held to zero hits in the first inning. Katelyn Westover started in the circle for the Jets, facing three batters and retiring all three in the first inning. Fort Hays was the first to record a hit in the top of the second inning, but nothing came of it. The Tigers continued to hold the Jets off the bags in the second inning. FHSU added two hits in the top of the third, but were again held scoreless. Lani Dryden batted the first Jets hit with a single to the shortstop, but the Jets offense could not put a run on the board. The Jets were next to record a hit and put a run on the board. In the bottom of the fifth inning, AJ Borja roped a triple to right field. Then, as a pinch hitter, Torri Waggoner batted Borja across the plate with an infield single. This gave the Jets the 1-0 lead with just two innings left. The Jets defense held the Tigers off the board in the sixth inning, but the Jets offense was unable to add more runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning with two hits. The Jets ended the inning giving up just one run. In the bottom of the final inning, Kayla Lopz singled to get the Jets offense going. Later, a sac bunt by Dryden advanced Lopez to second with two outs. Borja was next to bat, batting a fielder's choice but the Tigers defense made a throwing error to attempt to get Lopez out at third base. Off of this throwing error, Lopez scored the winning run to defeat Fort Hays, 2-1. 
 
Player Notes:
-Waggoner added the Jets only RBI.
- Lopez scored once and recorded one hit. 
- Westover pitched a full game, allowing just one run and five hits and secured the win in the circle. 
 
Game Two:
Paola Zamacona started in the circle for the Jets, holding the Tigers scoreless through the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Borja reached on a hit by pitch. Borja advanced to second after Reghann Fairbairn reached off a catcher's interference call. Following this play, Gianna Navarro singled to left field to push Borja across the plate. This gave the Jets an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers were able to tie the game in the top of the third inning off of two hits that helped score one to make it 1-1. In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers hit a two-run home run to take the 3-1 lead. Gianna Navarro ended the Jets hitting drought, singling to left field to start off the sixth inning. This was the Jets second hit of the game, with the first coming in the bottom of the first inning. The Jets offense was unable to bat around  a run in the inning, which led the Jets into the top of the seventh inning trailing 3-1. Fort Hays added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to push their lead out to 5-1. The Jets were able to cut the deficit to just two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With bases loaded, Waggoner connected with a single that scored two runs. However, the Jets late rally was cut short. The Tigers took game two, 5-3. 
 
Player Notes:
-Waggoner went 1-2 with two RBIs.
-Navarro went 2-4 from the plate with an RBI. 
 
The Jets are back tomorrow at 12 PM and 2 PM tomorrow against Nebraska Kearney.
